When do you trade in your vehicles?

I've got about 82k on the F150, I say it's time to trade it in. Wife (no pics) says she likes the idea of having no car payments.
In the past I've kept my vehicles until they were just about worthless except for the scrap value. But I've got the 3.5 ecoboost on this one and no major issues yet but I think I'll start having a bunch of problems soon. I think I should get what value I can get out of it now.
What say the OT?

I typically buy a new truck every 3 years or so, around 50k miles. Likely a terrible investment, but for me it works.

I traded in two vehicles back in the late 80s. I just sell outright when moving on to another vehicle.

I’d like to say I trade mine when the wheels fall off, but in reality it’s more like every 8-10 years

I’ve got a 2005 Chevy Silverado with 215,000 miles on it. The only reason I’m considering trading it is because I often drive late at night and don’t want to have problems. I don’t want to replace it though because I will never get another one that dependable again.

I generally keep them until they are crappy or repairs no longer make financial sense.
I had an 8 year old Infiniti G35 I just loved...it had 180,000 miles on it and I would’ve kept it longer but it had some issues that would have cost $4500 to fix.
I traded it in the next week.

Genuinely curious: Why do you not think you'll ever again have that dependable of a vehicle?

All vehicles are a terrible investment unless you drive wheels off.
I just chalk it up as part of life.

I would suggest trying to use tOT as leverage against the wife is a significantly poor plan.

quote:sold ours outright for more than we would have gotten in trade to a friend's college age son. It was an upgrade from his 1999 and we were still able to give him a great deal compared to what people are asking for them. Win/win

This is never the case unless you destroy it in a wreck.

I’ve got 317k on my f150, it’s a 5.0 though so we’re in a different league. I’m hoping to get another 100k out of it before I turn it into a secondary vehicle, it’ll never be worth trading in.

Even then the wheels don't just suddenly fall off after 15 years of worry-free driving. Older cars start nickle and diming you with repairs, especially if you aren't handy enough to do them yourself.
Anyway, cars aren't an investment, they are a service. How much are you willing to pay every year to get from A to B with a certain level of comfort and reliability?

Had a 14 Ram 1500 with about 115k miles. Just traded for a 20 Sierra. Was able to maximize for a good trade in with some other good offers. Just depends if there is a good deal out there and you can afford it. If it makes you happy...

Friend of mine has 200k on his 2011 Eco-boost- we just had a conversation about it a few weeks ago because I was considering reading mine in (2013 with 79k). He said it’s solid as long as the turbo doesn’t go out. I hope so- I’d like to get another 79k out of it. I don’t drive like I used to- I gave my Grand Cherokee to my MIL after 8 years and 160k. She’s probably put 5k or less on it in the past 7 years ??

It's not an investment. It's an expense like the light bill, but you might recoup some value out of it when you dispose of it.
I had someone that I think is generally an intelligent person once tell me he needed to trade to keep his asset value up.

When the wheels fall off.
Seriously, I keep my vehicles 5-10 years.
