re: When do you trade in your vehicles?

I like new cars.
I’m on my 6th vehicle in the past 8 years, but this time I traded in my Vette for an F150 because we moved to the country. Trucks don’t excite me, so I’ll jump off the new car carousel and stick with this for a long time. Don’t see myself wanting a new truck every year or two. It’s just a truck. Eventually I may buy a classic car, maybe a ‘57 Chevy or old Caddy to play with on the side.

My last two vehicles were both right at 130k miles and several years paid off before I moved on.
The first one was a '97 Mountaineer that had become more expensive to fix than it was worth.
The second one was an '05 Mazda 3 that still had plenty of life left in it, I just wanted something bigger.

I've got about 82k on the F150, I say it's time to trade it in. Wife (no pics) says she likes the idea of having no car payments.
Bro, you got 100K more miles before you should consider getting rid of it
Trucks are too damned expensive to keep cycling them out every 3-4 years

I’ve got a 2005 Chevy Silverado with 215,000 miles on it.
I have a 2006 Chevy 2500 that has 199,000 on it. It still runs like a champ and hopefully get another 10 years out of it. Much cheaper to replace parts than having a truck note.

82k on the F150,
What year? Which trim? Either way you still have a shite load of miles left. Like freaking triple that number.

I think I should get what value I can get out of it now.
If you drive it another 160k miles with no note, that sure sounds like a pretty damn good value to me

Likely a terrible investment
Outside of collectibles, cars are never an investment, good or bad. They are an expense.

typically buy a new truck every 3 years or so, around 50k miles.
And you really hate money.

Friend of mine has 200k on his 2011 Eco-boost- we just had a conversation about it a few weeks ago because I was considering reading mine in (2013 with 79k). He said it’s solid as long as the turbo doesn’t go out.
So a twin turbo charged motor is solid unless the turbos go out?
Is your friend John Madden?

2011 Ecoboost here. 150K on it. Pretty sure I blew a turbo this week. About to take it to the shop to see what is going on.
I will say I have had a tune on my truck since 25,000 miles pushing way more boost than stock. If it is a bad turbo this will be the first major problem besides a water pump that I have had in five years.

Bought this beauty new in Nov '05, now has over 340,000. 2006 GMC Sierra with a 5.3....
Have used it to haul our camper since 2010. Live W of ATL in Paulding Co. and have been retired for a few years. In '20 we hauled camper to Lake Weiss twice, Jekyll Island, Navarre Fl twice, Gatlinburg, 3 trips to Lake West Point and to the N. Ga mountains twice.
Think I'll go for 500,000...

I'm not impressed with anything under 200k. If a vehicle won't go 200k without major repairs with proper maintenance then it's dogshit to begin with and I don't want it with 5k on the odo.
But this? 340k on a half ton AND you pull a lot? That's impressive.
Same motor/transmission? I give GM a lot of shite but there's a LOT of these trucks from that era still on the road.

That 5.3 is a workhorse. Had to rebuild tranny in '16, guy put in a 'vette shift servo and a heavy duty sunshield? I think he called it.
Only thing done to engine (and it's common in this engine) other than regular maintenance was to pull the oil pan and replace the oil pump pickup tube and the o ring to stop a lifter tap when it's cold. Apparently that was an engineering flaw that if done will extend engine life tremendously.
I pull a 6000lb camper all over and she still goes...
Eta... headed to Navarre again for a week at Easter. Daughter, granddaughters and our new great granddaughter live in Ft. Walton..

When they require more maintenance to repair then there value. I usually take it to CarMax. At 180k miles my Traverse needed a transmission estimate was 6k. Drove it to CarMax they gave me 3k right on the spot. No brainer

Problem is that when you keep a vehicle to like 150,000 the vehicle isn’t worth anything.
People like to believe their vehicle is but that’s just emotional value and not realistic value.
Very few people want your 8-10 year POS vehicle.

Just crossed 100k on my 2010 Tundra. I'll be keeping it for a while.
I buy used with a top trim package.

My most recent vehicle replacement was due to an uninsured POS slamming into me at a red light when he was texting. Mofo jumped out and asked if we could handle this without involving the Five-0. That was my sign that we needed to involve the Five-O. Luckily for me he was in his brother’s car and his brother had USAA. My car was towed, I left in an Uber, and he left in handcuffs.
