There are plenty I’m sure I could think of, but the one that first popped in my mind was The Stone Roses. Hard to think of another band where the first album is that head and shoulders above the rest

You have your whole life to write your first album. You maybe have a year or two to write your second.

Boston is one of the the most canonical examples of this. There's a big drop from the 1st to the 2nd record and it's just straight trash after that.

Here's a variant on the theme: Almost every major group Ronnie James Dio sang for. Rainbow is the obvious exception because their debut was a bit weak, though it still has some strong material. I freaking love RJD, but Black Sabbath and then Dio declined after each debut.

Dire Straits - I like both Love Over Gold and Making Movies more than the first, though the debut was very good.

VH - debatable but maybe, and only because the debut is so freaking strong. The next few are great records too, not a weak one IMO.

I'm as big a Dire Straits fan as you'll find, and IMO their first album was fantastic from a pure guitar standpoint and simple recording and has great songs, but I like the 2nd album Communique just as well. It's still a great guitar album with great songs, but more polished and refined in the studio. Lady Writer and Once Upon a Time In The West are as good as you could ask for. Really there isn't a bad song on that album to me.

I beg to differ. I think VS is better than Ten.

Unless you use or retweak songs that didn't make it onto the first.

Good call. That’s another clear cut one. One of the greatest guitar albums of all time.
