A recent report by Fox News explained how the Oregon Department of Education encouraged teachers to take “ethnomathematics” training to aid in “dismantling racism in mathematics.”

Oregon educators did the training, called the “Pathway to Math Equity Micro Course,” in partnership with California’s San Mateo County Office of Education, Fox reported.

The Oregon Department of Education confirmed the initiative to Fox and defended its use in classrooms. A spokesperson for the department said the training course “helps educators learn key tools for engagement, develop strategies to improve equitable outcomes for Black, Latinx, and multilingual students, and join communities of practice.”

Apparently, one example of “white supremacy” in math is teachers asking students to “show their work” when solving math problems. According to class materials, this requirement reinforces “worship of the written word as well as paternalism.”

Students are encouraged to make TikTok videos rather than bow to the “paternalism” of writing things down.

Not the Bee. You can't make this shite up

I wonder how many things can get built or produced on the back of “ethnomathematics”

I wonder how a culture that uses mathematics as the cornerstone of its technological and engineering developments would fare versus a culture that focuses on how ethnomathematics can better affirm people

One of the few benefits of living and working in a white, wealthy suburb in Alabama. I won’t have to deal with this...ever.

These schools are setting kids up for failure.

They’re dooming them to a life of poverty and ignorance.

I actually saw this happen in my daughters school. Black mom accused the teacher of being racist because she was forcing her kid to do math and it was mean.

As a white male I can't tell you how many points I lost for not showing work.

Complete waste of time

Minorities are getting low test scores, not because of racism, but (1) they dont give shite, (2) the parent(s) dont give a shite to help them, or (3) the teachers suck.

Their point is more racist that the racism they're trying to tout. They are literally saying that minorities are unable to learn math.

one of my sons is very good in math.

except he can’t show his work.
as in he really isn’t capable and doesn’t know how.

he can multiply and divide compound fractions in his head. Gets them right at about an 85-90% clip.

just don’t ask him how.
he has no clue how to tell you why the answer is what it is. He just knows it.
