Baton Rouge proper is majority black. All things being equal, blacks will have the most encounters with law enforcement K-9s.

But things aren't equal. Blacks in Baton Rouge proper are far more likely to be low income, be high school drop outs, and to have a criminal record. They are also more likely to live in high crime zip codes that require far more police resources than other zip codes where housing is much cheaper than Louisiana's average neighborhood.

Whites in Baton Rouge proper are more likely to be wealthy by comparison, and live in neighborhoods like Goodwood, Hundred Oaks, or Bocage which are far more expensive than the average Louisiana neighborhood. Wealthy people and upper middle class people are more likely to be highly educated and employed. They are less likely to have a criminal record, and less likely to break the law. If they do, they are less likely to encounter a police officer in neighborhoods where crime is nearly non-existent.

So blacks have a disproportionately high likelihood to have an encounter of any type with any law enforcement officer, not just K-9s. This has nothing to do with racism. It's just the way things stack up demographically in this city. Had Baton Rouge not stopped annexing white middle class neighborhoods in the 1970s, things would be different today and you'd see a wider variety of middle and working class people making up the city. The city limits happen to be drawn around a grouping of particularly poor and particularly wealthy neighborhoods.

Go to Denham Springs or Watson, and white trailer park dwellers are far more likely to be face to face with a police K-9 than a black person. Head over to New Roads, Grand Coteaux, or Breaux Bridge and you'll find that the K-9s are most likely going hitting up a bunch of cajuns.

Advocate is being intentionally misleading and trying to create division. frick them and the activist journalists that they staff. This agenda-driven coverage is why no one trusts the media anymore.
