quote:Isn't the problem that the baws down in Texas don't use fossil fuels for heat and instead use the least efficient method in electric to generate heat?
I'm sure Sierra Club backers are thankful for their warm toasty homes this morning. They can thank coal and natural gas powered power plants for that as renewable sources aren't doing a thing currently.
Most of these renewable energy pin heads have no idea how inconsistent and unreliable they are. They see it as simply "let's replace coal and natural gas powered power plants with renewable energy, and we will have just the same amount of kW supplied to the grid."
You can't rely on sunshine and wind to reliably power the grid. Neither of those are consistent, but coal and natural gas can supply the grid at whatever kW is required at any given time.

quote:Yikes. Can you even keep the pool running with Temps consistently below freezing like they are now? Obviously we don't even try that up north.
Having to run electric for all these pools in Texas to keep the equipment from freezing and bursting is using up a lot of juice right now.

Natural gas hubs freezing up is actually the main cause of this issue. Why? Because the providers didn’t spend the $$$ winterizing their equipment. Now NatGas prices are through the roof and those stations that are still working are making a killing.
And who is going to end up paying the extra $? Customers are.
Wind is obviously an issue as well, but Gas makes up about 35% of Texas total energy production

Fixed it. We are soft as a nation. It has been so good for so long that people freak out at the slightest bit of hardship. I really feel bad for the homeless right now. Those that are truly suffering.

This just shows people have no understanding of there own HVAC systems. Electric heat uses 5Kw heat strips that run 20amps per strip plus the fan has to run to circulate the heat. Gas is the cheapest obviously. Those with heat pump systems are more than likely running on Emergency heat automatically because of the temperature at the condenser. Not to mention everyone running their heated pools and keeping those pumps circulating. The grid is overwhelmed

It's affecting a lot of ppl. I'm in IL and our city put out a message last night urging customers to reduce gas usage. It's -16 wind chill

You’re N Htown yea?

Why not winterize them instead?
Well, my power is just now out for the third time.

Hello neighbor, I'm in Arlington near the airport.
I'm going to check snow depth later. How much have you received?

quote:A lot of pools are like that. When you winterize you blow the water out of the lines then plug them. Drop the water below the skimmers to make sure they don't bust.

I know it's a little late now. Good luck.

Just got power back from a 4-hour outage. You could skate on my pool.

Right?
This is why I keep a spare generator in my home. I lose power I flip over to personal and boom I have have enough energy to power my home at least for a whole day until I get more gas. And that’s because I haven’t fully enhanced my gas storage capabilities yet.
Those people are all takers and none of them are gonna blame themselves for not preparing. They’ll blame the government or energy companies. Well I don’t rely on those companies absolutely. I have a personal backup plan should the system fail.

this
you can easily get a 60,000 Btu - 100,000 BTU heater. on a 240v 30amp circuit you are maxed out at 7200 watt.
you need nearly 30 kW (negating heat transfer efficiency) to equal the heat capacity of 100,000 BTU generated from natural gas.
same works for water heaters electric vs gas
efficiency wise gas is cheaper the electric in the long run. electric is a cheaper up from cost and cheaper installation, but natural gas is cheaper over time to operate
and living in huricane territory, natural gas is more reliable then electricity.....

This country should be 90%+ nuclear

Aren't most people on locked in fixed rates? Which means it will be a problem for the power company not consumers.
