I'm in East Texas. My heat source is propane as I live out in the country. I guess I have to hope I keep getting the electricity to run the HVAC. But it sure is pretty here looking at the snow and out over the water to the other side of the cove. If worse comes to worse, I have no firewood.

That's capitalism. When demand soars, prices will rise.

Is this only a Texas problem or will it happen in other states affected by this storm?

Natural gas has gone from 3.97 to $377 in the past 2 days in Texas so if you have a natural gas reserve sell it and buy some country for yourself somewhere.

Mizuho Securities USA LLC’s Robert Yawger, director of Energy Futures, said it was odd that gas is “bid to the moon” in West Texas/Oklahoma/New Mexico at the same time oil “explodes to the upside.” He noted that there is plenty of gas/oil infrastructure overlap in West Texas, though the oil rally may be primarily driven by reports of an attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on a Saudi Arabia airport.

“Brent has also ripped higher, which tends to point to the Houthi angle as the reason for the rally…just speculating, but the gas situation is out of hand,” Yawger said.

Their prices are going to affect ours?

It's not hard, follow the money. Power producers love the shite and can blame anyone or any weather anomaly to manipulate prices. Texans are paying for smart meters that don't belong to them. Think about that.

You can thank Bush for this mess.

Lucky you! We’re 3 hrs in w/o power. Supposed to be 45mins-1hr of interrupted service periodically but 3 hrs in is no muy bueno.

Because power poles going out never happens in a winter storm

This is an outage do to equipment, not a roll.

Yes, both situations are going on simultaneously.

You can't rely on sunshine and wind to reliably power the grid. Neither of those are consistent, but coal and natural gas can supply the grid at whatever mW is required at any given time.

Until wellheads freeze. Today is a case for coal, not natty gas.

With the failure of renewable energy in this polar vortex west Texas main hub power has put a huge load on natural gas. Normal Texas rates are 9cents per kwhr. Rates expected Monday and Tuesday if no relief is found is expected to rise to $4 per kwhr. Some residents power bills for the month of February could be in the thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars. Here’s your warning. I know a lot of Texas folks visit the board so any electrical that isn’t absolutely necessary I would completely unplug. I’m not sure the conditions in the southeast at this time but should know more tomorrow.

Well if they used natural gas to heat their homes they should be okay.

Pipeline quality natural gas is not an issue in cold weather.

It's only an issue when the gas stream is contaminated with water and hydrates form. When they do form pipeline operators usually know exactly where they form and can be addressed.

In central Texas and we run off gas. Makes for a lower electric bill but no electricity makes for no heat. Been out for about 2 hours now and it’s starting get prettt chilly inside now.

Unless the equipment freezes.....which causes numerous problems...compressors have issues starting/regulators freezing/technicians can’t reach a location to work on equipment.

Pipeline quality gas comes from dirty gas that is processed....if the dirty gas stops coming in you don’t get pipeline quality gas

Several of my wife's co-workers already had blackouts. Our house had no issues yet, I am in NW Houston...
