Trying to decide if this one of the BS no alcohol while on antibiotics or if it will truly make me sick. Going to dinner and would like to enjoy a couple beers or cocktails.

What kind of sick? If it’s stomach trouble - that’s not bad. If it makes you pass out - then that might be an issue.

I’m allergic to bactrim - so I’ve never had it with alcohol.

I'm not a doctor but I know from experience that alcohol reduces efficacy of antibiotics and that antibiotics reduce tolerance of alcohol.

That said, a few drinks probably will not hurt you, but a bender isn't a great idea.

my go to for medical question answers in Mayo Clinic:

Mayo Clinic - Bactrim & Alcohol

quote:

A few antibiotics — such as metronidazole (Flagyl), tinidazole (Tindamax), and sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim (Bactrim) — should not be mixed with alcohol because this may result in a more severe reaction. Drinking any amount of alcohol with these medications can result in side effects such as flushing, headache, nausea and vomiting, and rapid heart rate.

You shouldn’t mix any antibiotics with alcohol.

A beer or two and you’ll probably be fine. I’m not a doctor, but I overdid it once on bactrim and felt like shite.

Avoid alcohol. I did that once on Bactrim in my early 20s and ended up sick as a dog over it. Took just one drink.

It's entirely person dependent. I've been on Bactrim for a couple of years and drink on it. But my body is used to it. I found it would make me a little nauseous on an empty stomach though.

I have never quit drinking because of antibiotics and I'm fine. From what I heard they just don't work as well.

Skip any dose within 12 hours of when you plan to drink, start back dosing the next morning.

Yeah I've mixed it a few times like an idiot. You kind of feel like hell while drinking and bad hungover the next morning.

I doubt it.

That’s one of those just in case sort of things.

Some people are just way too sensitive to medicine

“Bactrim can inhibit acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, which is largely responsible for alcohol metabolism. If acetaldehyde dehydrogenase is less active, alcohol toxicity can build up and can cause what is known as a disulfiram reaction.”

Basically, combining them can cause you to have bright red face, fast heart rate, and low blood pressure. That is not fun at parties.

Don't know if true or not but Dr said don't drink when I took Flagyl. Said it would make me sick. Said that is what is given to alcoholics. Asked for a couple extra and I would report back but she said no.

They say don’t mix alcohol with Percocet either and I’ve never felt a better feeling
