I have a home alarm monitoring company (TOCA) that I pay for nothing - I never turn alarm on. So, I go to cancel and they tell me they are going to notify my homeowners insurance company that I no longer have a monitored alarm.

My homeowners insurer offers a yearly discount that about equals the yearly fee for the alarm monitoring.

This is all a scam in my eyes. Does anyone have an info as to whether alarm companies actually notify insurers of cancellations? Do insurers actually do anything about it?

Tell your alarm company you've already notified them, not a problem. But yes, if alarm company has the homeowner ins info, they very well have the right to do so.

So, you want a discount on your homeowners policy for having a monitored alarm without having a monitored alarm?

Screw those guys. I would cancel and pay the insurance increase just so the alarm company doesn't get my money.

Our alarm system got struck by lightning years ago, and the company told us they had to notify our insurance when we refused to replace it.

Not sure if they ever did, but we never heard from our insurance carrier nor saw any increase in rates.I felt at the time it was extortion from the alarm company.

Just tell them you switched to SimpiSafe. They aren't going to do anything.

Get a blink system that you self monitor. Tell your alarm company to go frick themselves.

What a joke of a service. My brothers once called me for his when he was on a flight an unreachable, and the cops showed up to his house 9 hours later. Lulz.

You can't have both. You no longer qualify for the insurance discount you were paying for. How is that so hard to comprehend?

There could be some fine print in your policy that says you have to contact them if something changes. It could potentially cause them not to cover you if you have a loss and they would discover it later. Having said that, if the alarm company doesn't have any law that they are breaking or whatever by not telling the insurance company, they shouldn't be the ones to tell. Nobody likes a snitch.

Threaten to call their insurance company and create a Mexican standoff.

Tell them you just canceled them. Doesn't mean you don't have an alarm.

Find out when they close on Fridays.

Call and cancel the service 10-15 minutes before they close.

There's no way the employee is going to call your insurance company right before they leave on a Friday and they'll probably forget about it by Monday.

Sometimes the alarm company will let the insurance company know but usually it's the insurance company that requires proof every year or so. If you don't have the monitoring anymore, the insurance company will 100% remove the discount.

My house is wired for an alarm. Never activated the service and never use it but it is on my homeowners because I have it.

Of course it is. You don't get a discount for something you don't use, it's obviously a scam

I bet you think insurance is a scam too because "I dOnT gEt MoNeY bAcK iF i DoNt HaVe A ClAiM!"

Wouldn't the scam be expecting the discount for a monitored alarm when you do not pay for the service and do not have a monitored alarm?

Alarm company charges $35 a month for service
Insurance company charges $35 for house without alarm

You actually lose nothing either way.

Why in the hell does the alarm company have your homeowner's insurance info?
