So I’m 48 and had never gone deer hunting until a couple of weekends ago. I borrowed a friend’s Browning X-Bolt (.280) and liked using it. I’m looking to get my own rifle for next hunting season. Thinking of driving down to Baton Rouge Saturday and was wondering if y’all could recommend some places to look outside of Bass Pro, Cabela’s, etc. that might have a decent selection.

Not even settled on a caliber yet, but leaning toward a bolt-action.

270
308
3006
7-08
Stupid creedmore

Any of these will serve you well.

ETA: 280 in a great caliber. Probably better than the 270. But don't buy. It's just not popular enough.

Look around online and find what you can get ammo for. It's pretty slim right now. I'll say I've seen plenty 270 WSM, 270 weatherby mag, and 300 WSM available. None of those would be in my top 8 choices normally, but today isn't normal.

A few thoughts.

Any caliber from .243 to 300 win mag will work fine for deer.
That said, ammo is a bitch right now and popular seems to be better.

6.5 creed
308
30-06

would be my short list at the moment, and I say this as a 243 fan.

You need to shoot. A lot. Don’t be one of those guys who fires three rounds a year and then blames the “bleedmore” when they can’t find their deer. With that in mind, I’d probably take the 06 off the list. They’re not terrible recoil-wise, but in a lightweight platform they can get not so fun quicker than something smaller and that’s not good for a new shooter. Shoot whatever ammo you can find at the range for now, but be sure you get bullets designed to kill medium sized game for hunting season. The 6.5 and 308 especially have lots of bullet offerings that are designed for paper or steel that are less than optimal for deer.

Caliber selection is a deep deep deep rabbit hole. They will all kill efficiently so stick to the bigs..... .243, 25-06, .308, .270 and 30-06. If you really wanna be super manly, you could step up to 300 win and super duper kill them even more dead.

Savage Axis comes with a scope in all major rifle calibers for about $330.

As far as which caliber, probably decide based on what ammo you can find.

Wow! Not one mention of a Browning.

I’ve been looking online quite a bit. Honestly I had not even considered a Tikka. Must be a good firearm.

Thanks for all of the info...

I personally wouldn't get a tikka in a short action caliber. It's not a real short action.
