Sign language on every .gov press conference. WTF?

Am I the only one who is completely baffled by this? It’s like they’ve invented a whole new level of fake virtue from liberals that we now have to use a sign language interpreter on tv. They’re pretending to give a shite about deaf people by putting an interpreter on stage that nobody needs anyway.
These morons apparently forgot that we’ve had closed captioning for decades and deaf people are perfectly capable of reading. The interpreter thing is completely idiotic and annoying simply for the fact it’s completely useless.

I (actually) laughed out loud on your comment (even though it’s not new). It was placed perfectly.

Is it for people that are actually there?
Or maybe someone in politics needed a job for one of their buddies in exchange for a favor.

Jam bands have done this. Creates an even cooler vibe knowing there’s more inclusion for someone not able to do basic things we take for granted.

This is a strange thing to be triggered by...

mainly yes... but it's also for deaf people that are watching on sets in public places, or even private residences, etc that may not have CC on...

considering this has been going on for YEARS and is not a recent phenomena, yeah, I'd say you are sailing that ship by yourself, captain

Wouldn't it just be easier for them to have the words on the screen? Speech to text is pretty accurate these days.

This has been a thing for a while. When Jindal was governor and he would speak during prep for an incoming hurricane, he had a sign language dude. And it was hilarious to watch because Jindal spoke about 1000 mph. Sign language baw had to have had arthritis of the fingers when it was all done.

I still can’t get over those liberals and their virtue signaling handicapped parking spots. And don’t get me started on fricking wheelchairs. What nerve!

I highly doubt it - what news agency sends a deaf person to a press conference?
While I don’t think this is necessarily a form of virtue signaling, it does appear to have become the “it” thing to do. So it’s either pandering to someone, or it is being used to show some form of “monkey-see, monkey-do” legitimacy.
I also agree that it is wholly unnecessary and is just for show (CC worked just fine for many many years).

So "frick the deaf" is the hill you're gonna die on?

But what about the deaf people who are also illiterate?
A deaf guy explained in this Washington Post article why cc is not the same:
quote:
The move marks the first time a presidential administration will have regularly accessible news briefings using ASL, a step that was welcomed by the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.?
“I felt a sense of greater equality,” said Robert B. Weinstock, a spokesperson for Gallaudet University in Washington, where all instruction and campus life activities take place using ASL.?Weinstock, speaking through an interpreter, told The Washington Post that the deaf community is happy that the White House is making briefings accessible and that having an ASL interpreter makes watching the news more enjoyable.?
Traditional broadcasts of the news briefings often have closed captions, but Weinstock noted that captions and ASL aren’t equivalent access; closed captions can’t capture the full range of information — and they’re not always accurate.?“If a person’s not familiar with that name, then the person typing out captions or hearing the name might not type it out correctly,” Weinstock said.?“The ASL rendition of the spoken English is more faithful, and more conceptually accurate in many cases than the captions,” he added in a follow-up email.?Weinstock said that interpreters don’t convey just words, but also nonverbal cues like tone and mood which they relay with facial expressions and body language.
