He's been a successful D-coordinator. Nielson is a career positional specialist with a short stint as assistant DC.

First, Nielsen wasn’t an “assistant DC” he was a Co-DC which is different. He was just as much a DC as Jones.

2nd, Nielsen has spent considerable time recruiting in the NCAA.

2nd Nielsen is absolutely ELITE as a position coach. Not good. Elite.

Jones has been mediocre to poor as a DB coach.

Hope he works out but on paper Nielsen appears to be a lot better NFL position coach than Jones. I don’t care what race he is.

I knew this shite was coming. Jones may end up a great hire but he was clearly the third choice. Let’s just hope this all ends up as a “thank god for unanswered prayers” kind of situation. I do not care who is doing the job as long as they do it well.

The desperation to connect him to Aranda is odd

I don't think it's odd. It seems like O is trying to recreate the 2019 staff with people who came recommended by that staff. Whether or not it works out remains to be seen. Just because they've worked with those guys doesn't mean they will be as successful.

We just wrapped up a season with the worst defense in LSU history. We fired a coach with a multimillion dollar buyout so we could fix a historic mess.

The offense wasn’t the problem. The magnitude of the hires do not compare.

Straight up, if you’re gonna rest on having a good defense at Bowie State 11 years ago, you’re not gonna win the argument. The dude is a huge question mark. Thisnis a big risk.

We’ll see if he pans out. That’s all we can did

But it should make you at least a little nervous for the defense.

O could either look like a genius or a fricking idiot.

I would prefer a hire that made him look like neither. Like a hire so good anyone would make it.

Racism is the new crying wolf term. It’s so overused!

The hire is highly questionable, so was Peetz. End is story. Why must it be more than that?

I agree! Nielsen was questionable too, but our fans were groveling at his feet. Just trying to think consistently.

Not even in the slightest. The two aren’t comparable.

One is possibly the very best DL coach in the entire NFL and now the assistant head coach of a premiere NFL team.

The other has bounced around and been extremely mediocre, statistics wise, as a DB coach. Mediocre is actually being generous.

He can still turn our great. Nielsen and he aren’t comparable though. Peetz, sure.

The offensive guys are being brought in to reinstall and run Brady’s offense (The best offense ever in college football) and are recommended by Brady and have been working with Brady on his offense this year.

The Jones situation is different. But I hope it works out.

This hire will have to basically scrap the whole D from last year and start from scratch.

In what world is a co defensive coordinator the same as someone who solely holds the title

At freaking Bowie State. Come on.

He’s still called plays as a dc at multiple levels multiple years. He’s also coached at virtually every level, and had been assistant head coach at a couple of stops, and that says something as well.
This guy has seen a lot in his 20 years of coaching, I’ll say that.

He’s our guy now, so we’re about to see what he’s got. And you’d have to think with so much riding on his performance for coach O, he’d have to have put some time into this and really felt he was the guy, especially with coach being a defensive guy.

Of course. All while forgetting the fact that a large portion of the board was very excited with the potential of landing Freeman as DC.

Nielsen was a guy that had major college experience and has for four years been the position coach of one of the better units in the entire NFL. One that many fans of LSU focus on because that NFL team happens to be in the same state. He also had a long history with Orgeron. There was hesitation, but he was not an out of nowhere name in terms of this search.

Peetz is a guy the fanbase sees as a potential recreation of the Brady model that was the biggest key to the success of 2019.

Jones may be great. But this is a completely out of nowhere hire. He wasn't a name that was talked about at all, by anyone. He's not a guy with ties to O or LSU or anyone even on the radar. The only somewhat tie is that he coached with Aranda at Wisconsin for a year. The same Aranda O seemed to be fine with leaving because he didn't love Aranda's style of defense.

If people are "melting" it is because LSU is coming off their worst season in 20 years and worst defensive season...maybe ever and the hire to fix that issue is a guy no one had ever heard of until a few days ago and one that seemed to have zero buzz among both the NFL and college football.
