What is your budget?

A full size pistol will have less recoil than a compact or subcompact due to its weight.

Best suggestion is to try out a few and see what she prefers. There are many out there that are extremely reliable.

ETA: I would start with a 9mm

The answer to this thread is always “take her to a range and let her try different guns.”

But other than that, you’ll get a million good suggestions. I think a snub nose revolver in 38spl (if you can find that caliber) is pretty good. Small, simple, reliable.

This is true. I have a S&W Bodyguard, very small and lightweight, good for carrying but has a big kick. I prefer my 9mm. She really needs to try them out before you buy.

Tell her to go hold an HK vp9 and then have her hold every other pistol. You want to know which one she'll pick everytime? As for recoil its no different than Glock, Fn, S&W, Beretta, etc. They'll all punch the same.

Or have her shoot a bunch of them and then pick the one she is most accurate with.

My wife would upvote. She always complained about not being able to operate any of my other semis. Bought this one for the lighter spring, and she likes it.

Get her what you want. Something cool AF with an optic on it.

Size was very important to my wife. She tried a few pistols. We ended up purchasing a Kimber .380 Micro Raptor Stainless.

It’s snappy, but most .380s are due to the shorter barrel length. But she liked the size (very compact) of the pistol and I’d rather her have something she picked out versus what I know is better, as she is more likely to use it based upon her preferences. One of her requirements was the pistol had to fit inside a compact purse.

Wife has a glock 43 in her nightstand. It saved her life once, too.

IMO options are pretty abundant. Let her shoot a handful, and let her pick.

Have her take a class such as NRA beginner pistol; preferably with a female instructor. It will help her confidence with whatever handgun she chooses and teach her the basics of firearms safety, operation, disassembly / assembly and cleaning. Many ladies are uncomfortable with a “Rambo” type if guy teaching them about firearms and they more readily identify with a female instructor.

At the end of the day, much of self defense is mental and emotional preparedness. The shooting part will be natural if range time and practice has happened.

All of the firearms suggestions given are good and you might end up getting a couple before it’s over. Nothing wrong with that.

Good luck!

I disagree with the revolver because she will be with a kid. Revolvers really need to be left loaded, which I don’t like.

If she is too gun shy and nervous to operate a semi automatic imo she needs more training around guns anyway. The nice thing about a semi is you can leave a magazine loaded and next to a semi, easily train to load the magazine and load a round into the chamber. It’s not as simple as a revolver but safer around kids imo. Or leave the loaded magazine in. I get a revolver is KISS, but it’s just too dangerous for my liking loaded around kids.

My firearms that are for self defense are loaded. Last thing I want to have to do is load a pistol or rifle when I feel threatened. I don't care how much training you get it can still go bad.

Shooting competitions has shown me this. You can have a Grand Master go to load his $3,000 race pistol and not seat the mag all the way and a round isn't loaded into the chamber. That pistol in your night stand could have the mag not properly seated and you won't know that until you go to load it.
