What difference does it make? You think the next guy really gives a shite that O wanted Freeman over him?
If I'm a DC at a secure job, let's say the guy at Wisconsin- yeah. I know my current boss WANTS me, and I don't have to worry about being replaced as soon as "next guy" comes available, and I'm still trying to put my system in.

Also, if I'm an up-and-comer at a smaller program, I might just wait until the next job opens up, so I don't look like a 'sloppy seconds' pick.

LSU's defense is a mess, and it's going to take some work to fix. And you have to face some potent offenses each year (Bama, Fla, Ole Miss, and the Air Raid at Miss St). If you come in already being "not the first choice", you're not going to get much slack to work with.
And that's with a head coach that seems to replace at least one coordinator every year.

IDK, but I think Ed's just immature. He hasn't handled position or success well.

Look I get it, we all want to play arm chair QB! So let me ask you this, what makes you the authority on how he hasn't handled his success well?

Straight up I want to know. Because I think he has handled himself all in all pretty damn good. After his complete failure at Ole Miss he ended up doing pretty damn well after that. Even after his success at USC and he let down he still got up in the morning and kept going!

Came to LSU where we all were pretty damn happy that he took the job and we finally got him here. Did a pretty damn good job after he took over for Miles. Won the Natty last year for us. Yes, he is rusty around the edges but I tell you what, he is Louisiana threw and threw and loves LSU and this state.

Being "one of us" doesn't mean he handles success well or poorly.

has no effect other than to get some of you out of your mind. when he's transparent and things work out, everyone says it's refreshing. when he's transparent and it doesn't work out, everyone says he should shut up. in life you win some and you lose some. I'd much rather a coach who is real and upfront then some coward that hides behind a podium and spews constant lies like Dan Mullen

Exactly.

People here just DIE for inside information. Asking every single day. Now they get said info and what they want to hear, it’s the wrong move and O is “clueless.”

People don't want to know who he wants, they want to know who we're going to hire. There's a difference.

Now, that being said, I can see some motive to his saying he wants Freeman. He's elevating the guy publicly, making it seem like he's of utmost importance (and thus will be a key member of the staff and compensated nicely). It's a recruiting method, he's calling Freeman "the man". It just didn't work on him.

We'll see how it works out, and I think more importantly, we'll see if he can retain his coordinators more than a year this time. That's the biggest key- we need some continuity going forward. Can't keep getting on the merry-go-round and expect to contend.

Doesn't make any sense. From that moment, that target has all of the leverage.

As do the other options if the “1st choice” falls through. They know they weren’t the top choice and you just got turned down by your real preference. You are in a bind now and they know it.

There is nothing wrong with having a preference but a program like LSU shouldn’t be doing one interview at a time. They should interview multiple and then make the offer. Now you are starting from square one and many options are gone.

This is why many don’t believe in O as a long term guy as a head coach. His failures in recruiting (and by that I mean his misses) work our the same way. Focused so much on Cam Akers and Étienne spurned LSU when he was a backup choice. Same thing with the Mario DB that also went to Clemson.

Rewind a year. Ed was National COTY. He had deep pockets. Every DC in CFB and several NFL teams were in play.

And he hand picked Pelini. Here we are a year later. Whoever he hires this year could probably have been hired last year without the Pelini mess up.

Sometimes Ed behaves like Jethro Bodine. It's moves like this that compel us to question his maturity.

Then ask for the HC to take a demotion of be fired!

What kind of question is this? I gave my opinion. That's what we do here. So I'll lob a silly question back into your court: what makes you an authority to question my authority regarding Ed's maturity?

Here's some of the reasons I question his maturity:
1) 'prefer a spread offense.' Then, 'I wanna a pro offense.' Make up your mind Ed.
2) Regarding Giles: 'nobody can cover him.' The guy was like the 6th best WR talent on the roster practicing against Greedy and Kristin. Really Ed?
3) 'I'll work for less so I can hire the best coordinators in CFB.' Drum roll . . . wait for it . . . your OC is Steve Ensminger. What? Regardless of how much Steve loves LSU, he wasn't even in the discussion of best OCs.
4) The Pelini hiring (and firing).
5) 'Defense looks better than it did anytime last season.'
6) The photo.

Let's dispense with this here-n-now: I came to LSU and didn't leave until I graduated (BS ChE).

And other coaches don’t say that? “You’re our top target, you have a chance to compete for immediate playing time.” And so on and so on....
The truth is at LSU you can play immediately in most cases and they probably are a top target. The key to being a good HC is being a top recruiter and surrounding yourself with top assistants who can coach

I don’t think succeed or fail that the showing of hands (Freeman is my #1) is necessarily a bad thing if they(Woodward and whoever else) allow O to hire a white guy now If he wants. O can now say I went all in on the black guy, gave him whatever he wanted, and he stood us up at the alter. Now I’m moving on...

WOW!

Was Freeman the best DC that was open to moving?

You must have been miserable in 2019 when Coach O had that magical season. Too bad for you we didn't get Jimbo, Herman, Fedora, etc., and stupidly let Derek & Alleva hire O.

Freeman's agent leaked out the ND and LSU interview last Monday. Literally everyone in CFB knew then that Freeman was who both of those 2 schools wanted
