Spot on.
This is a great discussion, seemingly, for once around here.

RINO was popular long before social media

This is also the fault of the Republican party. It was you clowns who courted religious nutjobs as your base.
That was a big part of how Bush won the 2000 primaries ahead of McCain.
I don't think the religious right is really as powerful as they were. Trump had their support, but that wasn't who he campaigned to directly.

absolutely... and it's really frustrating and sad that we, as a society, have let it get to this point... It really is
I think it's going to get worse.

which begs the question, how divided are we in reality?
because I do believe that the vast majority of the people would agree with most of the sentiments of this thread
your degree of blame might shift to the right or the left depending on your political affiliations, but I do believe most people know and understand what is happening
I guess the question is whether or not the fringe is growing, or do we simply just have more access/knowledge of them?

The bottom line cause is we no longer have a free press. It has morphed into a wing of the socialist Democratic Party
Our press is a big problem. Not only do they fail to understand why Trump got so popular, they basically never really expected him to come close to beating Hillary. They look at Trump supporters the way people look at zoo animals.
They are in a huge bubble, and I think at least partially compromised by foreign influence.

I think most intelligent people do actually have pretty nuanced views on issues, and have views that run counter to the party they mostly support. One thing I really hate in politics(and I'll admit I've been guilty of it) is using someone's views from 20+ years ago on something against them. If your views aren't evolving and changing as you age, are you really growing as a person? I know personal growth can be incongruent with political evolution, and often times that political evolution is simply political expediency, and often times it is impossible to discern which one it is. Obama's evolution on gay marriage is a great example.

amen
seriously this drives me insane
we should actively encourage changing of opinions, especially when it happens when the person receives more information about something and updates their opinion to reflect that better information
instead we shame them
drives me nuts

I’ll add this, the purity test component of our extreme politics is destroying good policy at the state level. States with deep red and deep blue super majorities don’t make good policy, the state becomes a performative display of just how good a bunch of republicans/democrats they are.

It certainly feels that way.

Natural progression, which unfortunately is not fast enough for most these days has rendered this group relatively antiquated and irrelevant IMO.
More and more people, including the freaking Pope are relenting on these types of inflexible social views driven by religion.
Unfortunately, we've just swung in another direction completely regarding social and religious compromise.

If I’m being honest, I believe there is a slight chance that Hank is absolutely brilliant and that Guam might actually tip over

Politics, particularly when it comes to career politicians, has become more about self-preservation than about effecting change or working for the betterment of constituents. That makes morals and ethics rather malleable, especially with the speed at which the modern, technology-driven world moves. All modern US politicians are beholden to the vote, and only the vote. Voters are more fickle now than ever due to the avalanche of (mis)information that flows toward them on an hourly basis. It doesn't matter if the average voter is capable of parsing out fact from fiction, all that matters is what they perceive to be truth. So, that fact undermines any ethical or moral standing that a politician may have. Couple that with the nature of the career politician, the self-preservation at all costs in order to maintain their position and standing, and you have a major problem. The people, by and large, are overwhelmed with information that they are incapable of vetting, and the politicians have no desire or benefit of clarifying anything. Stances and platforms no longer matter. Regardless of your chosen party affiliation, the fact that we just elected a President who did little-to-no actual campaigning is telling. There is no way that would have happened 20, or even less, years ago.
