Should college football just do away with bowl games and expand the playoff?

After watching D’Eriq King suffer what looks to be a torn ACL in a meaningless game is it time to rethink how college football does its postseason? It seems there is always one of these injuries every year in bowl games that mean nothing with it all starting with Jaylon Smith’s injury years back. One of the players from OK State decided to not play the 2nd half after watching King go down. Why not have an expanded 16 team playoff over 4 weeks instead? You’d have more teams with something to play for and less reason to opt out during the year.

Giving 8 a shot at a title is hard to justify, giving 16 teams a shot is just taking a fat dump on the regular season and conference standings in general. No. 4 is right. Bowls are great except this year. Kids love the swag, TV coverage is great, interesting matchups if only because they are rare. There are probably 5 too many bowl games (in a normal year), but overall I love it.

Yes, because there are no injuries during the playoffs.

Also, no injuries happen at practice, or while doing private workouts/training.

No. Your idea of a sixteen team playoff is nonsense.

It’s the only thing that can save it. The thought that postseason is meaningless without a championship has thoroughly set in. Bowls no longer have a purpose unfortunately.

And it was fairly obvious to most that a four team playoff would always eventually expand.

The ncaa should hold its own tournament for all teams left out the CFP. Would be interesting.

10 automatic conference champions
6 at-large highest ranked teams

1st rd played at higher ranked teams home
2nd rd played at select bowls
Final 4 played liked they are played now.

I think this approach keeps the regular season games important because you want the auto qualifier or ranked the highest possible to get extra home game.

Why can’t bowls be incorporated into a larger playoff? Ex. winner of Alamo bowl plays winner of music city bowl. Etc.

I’ve said this for years.

The playoffs have made other bowl games meaningless and rightfully so.

Who even gives a shite about a “NY6” bowl anymore?

Pandora’s Box has been opened with a four team playoff and you can’t close it back again.

No. Just make the conference championship games round one from the power fives. Add one team from the best of the other conferences.

Why do you have to do away with bowl games to expand the playoffs? You can have both. I enjoyed watching OSU vs UM and UT vs CU. If you didn’t then just watch something else.

Keep the playoffs at 4 teams.

But DEFINITELY get rid of most of these useless bowl games.

Going to a ‘bowl game’ is meaningless now and they’ve completely ruined it.

Aside from the 2 playoff games, there should be maybe 15 bowl games.

Because 8-13 of the invitees won't be worthy and it'll dilute the quality. You think OU didn't have any business in the playoffs a year ago? How does another dozen scrubs getting mauled sound?

Expand the playoffs and the bracket will become as meaningless as the current bowls and regular season.

This is just more millennial bullshite. The instant gratification or quit generation. These are not supposed to be just pre NFL training camps. They’re universities with pride and traditions. This newer generation has lost site of any of that. It’s a sad era in cfb, for sure. And to the point of expanding the playoff. That definitely cheapens the regular season. You have teams that go undefeated or lose one hard fought game, they get in. 8 or more teams in a playoff is like a slap in the face to these teams that worked hard day in/day out to make every game count. Then you get multiple two loss and even 3 loss teams in, because of media bias.

To my point of going undefeated or losing one hard fought game, Notre Dame does not belong this year. This just shows how the CFBPO is already manipulated with only 4 teams. Just think of the circus it will be with 8 or 16 teams.
