Is every new phone as bad as the reviews say they are?

Specifically for all the new Samsung and IPhones, the reviews are extremely bad. I'm usually suspicious of online reviews because it's seems like an easy way for competitors to turn people off, but if that's the case, it's kind of working on me. Not getting that warm and fuzzy excitement for a new phone after reading all the issues.

I think expectations are kind of high, which I guess is warranted in 2020, but they still have to hit price points.
What kind of issues are you reading about? Hardware? Software? I don't even worry about flagships anymore, just don't seem worth it to me. I just got a Pixel 4a for $350, and it's tough to be let down at that price. It handles everything I need it to do and I have yet to end a day with less than 45% battery (usually around 65% after 16 hours off the charger).

It seems to be both hardware and software if you read enough reviews. Poor materials, no SD expansion, apps not working, calls dropped, biometrics unreliable. And yea I guess when in the context of value, I can see people being more critical.

Electronics reviews attract snobs who love to complain about everything.
I've learned this through my camera purchases.

Where are you looking? Overall they almost all have very positive reviews.
I'm sure people trying to get clicks will go super critical, but I can't remember any flagship phone getting "extremely bad" reviews.

Expectations have gotten a little unrealistic towards phones. Camera technology is really good right now, battery life is great, a variety of form factors ranging from small to huge, build quality has gotten good. About the biggest complaint is that prices on the high end are a bit excessive for the difference from the low/mid range phones.
IMO, it's hard to argue against something like an iphone 12 mini. It's a good phone that is really portable and doesn't break the bank.

IMO the "worst" iPhone in recent years has been the iPhone SE (2).
I just upgraded from the original SE (6s in a 5 body) to the new SE (11 in an 8 body) and am pleased with it.

You're right, the mini and pro max have a decent rating relatively, as does the $2k Samsung fold which is not really of interest to me for several reasons. I guess I was more tending to the Samsung options since that is what I am used to. I find anything less than 4 stars has reviews that include some pretty concerning comments.
Here is a link to the difficult to find Verizon site for that other poster. The t-mobile site has similar reviews. I am sure it can be found with some diligence if more examples are needed.

I was talking about this with some tech friends this weekend. We've all quit following phone tech.
Mobile phone discussion and reviews were fun years ago when tech was advancing quickly and we were flashing ROMs.
Now it is awful. If a phone isn't perfect and sells for more than $299 the brand is failing. For a while every debate was about boring shite like screen bezel size. With social media/forums any minor issue or problem is amplified.

Marques Brownlee had the Samsung S20 FE as his phone of the year.
I feel like he goes only a moderate amount into the specs of each device, certainly not too far beyond what an average consumer needs to concern themselves.

This is good info, guys. I found it hard to believe these phones were as devastatingly bad as some of these phone yelpers were saying, but you never know.
I appreciate the feedback.

Galaxy Fold 2 is exceptionally well reviewed.

I have a Pixel 5, great price point, not a big gigantic phone. Which I previously had, I actually appreciate the 6" screen size. Phone works well all the time. Great device.
