If this explanation accurately describes the reason for this season, then the players would all have been better served by opting out than looking like crap on film. This makes no sense to me

Several did, right after he went on there. I'm sure that was just a coincidence though.

This season has been a huge dumpster fire for a lot of reasons and this was one of them.

Well you have to be more specific. O handled it poorly at the outset and appeared tone deaf to the players. However, he could have recovered. Gundy did after his situation. O never addressed it fully with the players; didn’t seek guidance from knowledgeable people. It’s an example of his being shortsighted and lack of critical thinking.

Couple that with players not responding well to Pelini’s style and it’s spirals into toxicity.

Our team that drops the ball before scoring so they can show off down 21 pts is holding O accountable for not doing anything wrong. Good times.

Seems like that was the downfall with coach O and the players before the season started.

No doubt.

As the head of a program, Orgeron probably could have handled it better. A college football coach doesn't need to be going on Fox News.

Me personally? I don't have a problem with how he handled the protest stuff. frick all of the social justice bullshite that took place this summer. If that's how Orgeron felt personally, then fine. If the players don't like it, then that's also fine.

Correct.

I would say how I really feel about some of our players, but I would get banned from this website.

Yeah, but it still equates to handling the whole protest thing better than O did.

You understand Ed isn’t trying to recruit you, or maintain any type of relationship with you, right?

Do young men come to LSU to play football or protest?

You mean they didn't mention that Trump passed an EO allocating more funding for HBCs than any other president? Or that he worked with Ice Cube to put together the "Platinum Plan" to set aside 500 billion dollars for black start-up businesses?

I'm shocked

No I don't think I heard Phil, or any of the other guys mentioning that. They just got together put politics aside and did a charity event, which is why I watched it, and why I watched Tiger, Phil, Peyton and Brady earlier this year. No freaking politics one way or the other., just help raise money for some good causes.

IIRC, Coach O was asked about the job Trump was doing trying to get CFB started back up from the shutdown, not how Trump was doing as President overall. Context matters

This may come as a shock to you, but college recruits do not have to choose between choosing a college and having a political opinion. They are entitled to both.
Going to college and obtaining an education means, among other things, developing informed opinions and expressing them, if the student so desires.
Did you attend college?

So because "O" didn't pat his players on the back and tell them what great phony virtue signalers they are, he didn't handle it well? He hasn't handled his staff well. If players are butthurt about some stupid protest about a narrative that they're too lazy to actually educate themselves about, then they deserve the season they've had.

Edit- And all the phony virtue signalers in this thread who are taking the side of the players over their political BS deserve this season, as well. You are all pathetic.

People bring ahit like this up like they actually believe Stevens is playing poorly because of this.

Flott isn’t getting toasted by Smith because the players are upset about how O handled the protest. Shinehan and Deculus aren’t fricking turnstiles because of any political leanings.

Can we even blame this for Chase and Shelvin opting out? Is the time if even right for that?

The president was very kind and complimentary of LSU football in the previous months. How dare Coach O return the kind words, right?

You have to think about it from a Cost/Benefit POV. Saying nice things about the president was definitely going to piss some people off and the demographic of those that would be angry is the same as those he coaches. I can’t think of a single benefit of complimenting Trump other than maybe with some of the fan base. The benefit of going on Fox News is obviously the exposure that the program gets on national tv. So the cost is potentially alienating yourself from your team and potential recruits and the benefit is having a small portion of your fan base happy. I say a small portion cuz I believe that even though most of the fan base voted for trump, most probably didn’t give a shite what O had to say about Trump either way. I know I didn’t care.

The opposite side is to not say anything about Trump or to not even go on Fox News. The benefit is that you don’t ruffle any feathers with your team and recruits. The cost if you avoid the whole thing is you don’t get to be on national TV repping LSU on a platform where other coaches don’t get that opportunity. If you go on Fox News and just don’t compliment Trump, I really don’t see a cost. Or at least not a big one.

Point blank, O didn’t think his actions through and it hurt him and his program.

I’m sure many of you will say that it’s soft that the player care this much about someone complimenting Trump but this board would blow up if he said good things on national tv about Biden or Bernie or Hilary. Hell half the board was pissed off that O is friendly with JBE.

That may be true but it still wasn’t smart of O. When you are in the business of recruiting 16-18 year olds African Americans, you should probably just avoid politics best you can.

He just complemented the President of the US during a news interview about playing football this season with Wuhan when asked a question about Trump. It’s not like he allowed himself to be listed as being part of a campaign fundraiser like he did with Edwards.

Even if he had endorsed Trump the players should know who he is and if they liked him before that would be on them if they think differently just based on learning his politics. Not all blacks believe they have to hate Trump much less take every chance to demonize him.

I think they had already started to lose respect for him this off season before with Wuhan limits and O preoccupied increasing this division and then the Trump thing allowed race baiters to add their hate fuel to something already smoldering.

Throw in Pellini coming in as an arse following a DC completely different mentality and players that just won a national championship thinking Pellini has mot earned jumping on defending national champions also added to division especially if O was distracted and liven large. O took his eyes off team a lot this off season, and he already is not a coach who plans out and controls everything like Saban with people hired specifically to make players believe in process and follow it.
