There is a way to get your insurance cheaper IF you have a company car or business that you run and can put a vehicle in business name. That way you become primary driver on the 16 year olds vehicle and the 16 year old is secondary driver on all vehicles in the household except the company vehicle.

With good driver, good student, and steer clear discounts the premium on 'his" vehicle is $960 for 6 months which is $160 per month.

Wrong, Only if she is an occasional driver without a primary auto.
$541/month safeco 19,23 boys on 04 Tacoma, 10 f150, me 2018 f150, wife 15 edge. Laf Br NO are most expensive locals in reverse order.

Here’s what you do. Keep the ins you have on you and your wife’s car. Go to a completely different company and insure the new car in your name with your kid as part time driver. Won’t be cheap, but will be significantly cheaper than her being a primary driver. Can’t put her as a part time driver if there are three vehicles.

Also, only a moron buys a 16 year old a new car.

I have never had an insurance agent ask me who drives what.

I do think that you can exclude your teenage son from your Hemi Cuda or whatever if you ask for that.

My advice to anyone balking at $350 / month to get his kid on the road is to man up and pay the cash. Making your kid ride the school bus (or mom's Yukon XL or whatever) is not worth it. Trust me.

The insurance on my truck is $65 a month FFS.

But you are not 16. Welcome to the real world of teenagers driving. You better hope she never gets in a fender bender. If that happens you would be thrilled to have to only pay 350 a month because it likely will double

Been doing it for 20+ years, have classed 16 yo on beaters when they actually drove the newer autos. My boys are classed on the autos with liability only which are the ones they drive.

My kids got whatever they wanted as long as it wasn't over $6000. No way in hell was I going waste money on insurance for a teenager that just needs to get from point A to point B. I told them I'm buying the first one you can buy the next. That's just stupid throwing away money so a teenager can be cool.

When I started driving my dad put me on his old work truck and put himself on the vehicle I drove because it was a lot cheaper. I thought everyone did this

There's good reason.

I have 7 nephew and nieces. 6 of them had accidents on their "new" car within a 2-3 yrs. 3 totaled it. 1 did so on two of his cars.

Ding ding, they will cover one accident if she is a licensed driver. Then your insurance as a whole will skyrocket. I did this with my children and never had an accident or any trouble, probably saved 40 or 50 thousand dollars over 7 yrs.

Insuring teenager drivers has always been expensive. They have more accidents.

Buying a new car for a teen makes the cost even higher.

Facts...

This, 100%.

Any agent who does not suggest this (when it's possible) is not doing their job correctly.

I guess I don’t do my job correctly then because I damn sure won’t knowingly mislead one of my carriers like that and put my contract at risk if/when the teenager gets into an accident and the carrier finds out that they were the primary driver all along and that I knowingly misrated the policy. I’d rather not write a policy for someone who wants me to lie for them than to risk losing an entire book of business with that carrier in the slim chance I get caught.

Can you make her the principal driver on your cheapest car instead of a new one?

You should have bought a $8000 Toyota. Would have been much cheaper.
