I look at this two ways:

1- I was worried we gave up what we gave up for a one year rental, the fact that we agreed on an extension eases my mind.

2- I would have been happier at like 15M a year, but 17.5 isn’t bad. It’s not like at 2/30 the extension is an A+ and at 2/35 it’s an F.

The guy I liken him to is Jonas Valanciunas, who signed for 15M a year last offseason. So again, not great, but not bad either. Certainly like the contract more than PT darling Myles Turner got.

Eh, teams had money they just didn’t buy centers.

The money was spent on players that can shoot or handle the ball.

Guys like joe Harris & Marcus Morris got $140mil worth of contracts lol.

There is a shift there. Adams wasn’t sniffing another contract like he got in 2016, even in a bigger cap year.

But hey contracts aren’t given in a vacuum. And it’s why maybe 3% of all non-rookie contracts in the nba would even be considered fair money

I'll say this.

Ther won't be a single person on this board questioning his heart like we were with Favors. Dude hustles like Josh on every play.

They also re-signed with their teams that had their bird rights. It's not the same as the open market where only 4 teams had cap space, Detroit, NYK, Charlotte and Atlanta.

Charlotte blew their load on Hayward, Detroit brought in 12 centers, NYK, well they're the Knicks nobody wants to go there, and Atlanta already has their big men.

Again, you cannot judge the salaries off what free agency was this year, because almost every team was limited to the 9.7 mle

30+ year old backup centers signed with contenders for $10 million a year. Center market was plenty healthy for the money that was available. Next offseason, we will have a couple more maxed centers and there will be more cap space than worthy players. I am really confused how people are looking at these deals and saying, yeah, that’s an example how Adams isn’t worth $17.5.

Really like the deal now with this extension.

Slight overpay possibly but not much.

1. Veteran true Center
2. High motor; high character; good mentor for Hayes etc.
3. Improved interior defense and taking inside defensive pressure off of Zion.

Want to keep Bledsoe.

We are definitely needed better quality at PG and C so very good job Griff.

As others have said, this is a solid deal for both sides. Perhaps on the high side of fair value.

SA will play the Drummond/Dwight Howard role in the SVG offense is my guess.

Veteran true Center

All points are great, but I feel this is vastly overlooked. First and foremost a true veteran that brings experience and grit.

Secondly, a TRUE center. No more pretending. No more getting by with less than. A guy that has done nothing but play center his whole career and knows how to man the middle and has the size/weight combo to do it, unlike so many other guys.

They paid their own players because they had Bird Rights

4 teams spent more than the MLE (outside of teams using Bird Rights to sign their own players).

Don't try to use logic. The spin is obviously we overpaid despite the crap that was out there.

I mean you can call Ibaka a center, but the dude is 220 lbs. and played PF literally next to Adams in OKC. Most of those other guys were tweeners too, or just plain ole not that good.

This trade gets worse and worse. How many old school centers would a team pay 3 years $65 million for and give up a player like Hill, a 1st and 2 2nds? Griffin must be infatuated with him.

Hill was always a salary moving piece. No loss there. 2 2nds is jack and shite.

It's basically just a lottery protected first for 3 years of a true defensive center which this team sorely lacked. It was the ONLY way we were getting a player of his caliber, which is far beyond 90%+ of the bigs that were on the market this year.

His deal was also inflated because it occurred in 2016, the year of the huge cap spike. Basically everyone who signed that year had inflated salaries.

The majority of the ones on the list from earlier? Hell no. The couple that may be are more tweener than center. Ibaka was a steal but Adams has 45 lbs. on him.

The contract values for Steven Adams’ extension with the New Orleans Pelicans are:

2021-22: $17,073,171
2022-23: $17,926,829

Adams has a new 7.5% trade bonus on the extension. He previously had a 7.5% trade bonus, but is expired upon his trade from the Thunder to the Pelicans.
