Notre dame was 100% in that previous group of teams. Living off past glory, totally overrated year over year, blown out whenever played a team with a pulse, blown out in bowls, etc.

Brian kelly did something the many coaches of texas, michigan, nebraska, Tennessee, and increasingly florida state haven't: he brought them back to elite play.

how has he done it?

They played Clemson after clemsons most physical opponent. That’s the biggest reason they won, because Boston college brought the wood.

He can scout talent without Rivals helping him. That's how he won at Grand Valley.

His down years were because he hired Brian Van Gorder at DC.

It's not just this game, dude.

ND has been a playoff caliber team every year for past 5 years.

ND has a much stronger national footprint than those due to Catholicism. ND has been consistently good, even with their "down" years they were still usually making BCS bowls or in the discussion, they just couldn't close to deal.

Remember when forced that kid on the scaffolding to
Fold practice during a wind storm and the scaffolding fell killing the kid.

Kelly and Notre Dame gave zero fricks about a dead student.

Boston College walked so that Notre Dame could run

It’s kinda a weird premise for a question. It’d be like asking what Saban “did right” to turn around Bama. The top-10/15 programs are all in the same boat; they basically go as the coach does. Kelly is a good not great coach which is why he’s had good not great results. That’s pretty much it. He’s also learned a lot since the failure of 2016 and become an even better coach, which is why the results have been better in the past 3+ years than the first 7 years. Ultimately, those other programs you mentioned have/had coaches much worse than him.

Haven’t they been absolutely THROTTLED in playoff/championship games?

I like them. And think they’ve had some good teams in the last decade. But they aren’t great and it really isn’t saying anything at all that they’re better than the teams you listed.

Notre Dame’s roster is littered with seniors. Their entire OL is seniors and their D is full of them.

Pump the breaks, they almost let Clemson come back to beat them with a 2nd string FR QB.

They have struggled against Duke and FSU at times this season. I think now Bama or OSU would be them by 2 scores minimum

2010, 2011 and 2013 were before BVG. Van Gorder did help screw 2015, which I think was BK’s most talented roster (certainly offensively at least), was part of the mediocrity of 2014 and helped cause the disaster of 2016, but BK himself also did a lot of introspection.

One thing Kelly does right is that he has very little patience with below average assistant coaches. After Notre Dame had that horrendous 4-8 season a few years ago, he canned both of his coordinators. He also didn't retain Chip Long as his offensive coordinator who wasn't terrible by any means but failed to meet up to Kelly's standards. An absolutely essential quality to having sustained success as a head coach in CFB is 1) Having very little loyalty to assistant coaches and evaluating them strictly on a performance-based level and 2) Having a keen eye for hiring good assistant coaches. Kelly fits into both categories which is why he's still going strong after a decade at Notre Dame.

They are a LOT better this year. They were physical on D (and hung with Clemson's athletes.)

This isn't the Manti Te'o ND teams that were grotesquely overrated and gave Bama a scrimmage for a title game. Worst title mathcup maybe we've ever seen.

This team seems to have the chops unlike that 2012 nonsense that beat Purdue and BYU by 3 points, Stanford in OT, Pitt in 3OTs, etc.

It feels athletically they've taken the next step.
