That isn't an easy commute. No straight shot. I think you have to go around and then north. They may have commuter buses but that may be for the resort. Not sure.

Seems you are getting some front slope comments and that is entirely different than Telluride. Telluride is a wonderful town, but its small, expensive, and isolated.
However if you are into skiing there are no better places to be. That mountain is awesome. The population will be a mix of ski bums, rich people on vacation, and Europeans. Telluride is one of the most expensive and exclusive areas of Colorado.
You mentioned commuting from Ridgeway (pop- 1,000) or Montrose (pop 19,000 also 1 hour 22 minute drive to Telluride on perfect day, and not easy driving). Make that drive when you are there for the interview and that may be the deciding factor. It's a ok route most of the time (twisting turning two lane highway) with epic amounts of beauty, however a few times during the winter it could be downright dangerous.
You are going to need a 4wd or AWD for some of those winter commutes and be smart about days when it may not be possible to make the commute. I've personally lost traction on that drive and ended up in the ditch. I was lucky not to hit a tree.
You didn't mention if you are coming from a small town in LA, so realize for your family those communities are small. Your wife and daughter may or may not like that. If you are into the outdoors (camping, winter sports, fly fishing, etc) then the area is great. If you are more into city amenities than skip it.
But, if you can make it work and you don't mind the small town isolated feeling that area is absolutely beautiful. The winters can be tough but the summers are the best.

Is COL built into the job? As said the housing is very expensive there, like through the roof and your other options are very limited.
You don't want a long commute in Colorado you will hate it, the snow and ice will make it miserable.
I'd worry they are offering you the job because the pay isn't great and to get someone there for that pay means they have to make some sacrifices.

to go from baton rouge to telluride is the equivalent of growing up poor and hitting the lottery. take the job, move your family, and never look back. that should be the easiest decision you ever make in your life. seriously, telluride is incredible.

Your wife is correct on the western slope, Telluride however is not the Western slope. It is basically the Alps of America. It is a very expensive place to live for most people (my butler has a small 5,000 sft second home there).
Seriously one of the most beautiful places our country has to offer. It is cold but you can dress for that. There are some amazing festivals in T-ride year round.

Grand Junction is part of the Western Slope. We are looking to move to the area. There are lots of small towns all around that are only all about 5 to 10 minutes apart. Over 100 lakes to fish on the Grand Mesa, Moab an hour away, best mtn biking in CO,. hunting, uncrowded skiing at Powderhorn, and it is on the CO River. If you golf, Redlands (5 minutes away) is the best golf course in CO. It is exploding right now and a great time to get in, IMO.

I lived in Durango for over a year and have gone back to Ridgway a couple of times a year for the past 16 years. Great place to visit but you might be in for some culture shock. It is ridiculously liberal, although the dude that owns the nudie hot springs is a rabid Trump supporter. Six months of winter and limited daylight was tough. The wife hated it. All the women there were real crunchy and she wasnt in to unshaven legs and pits. Might need to really consider your current lifestyle and make sure that culture swing would be a good fit.

Buy some warm clothes, get AWD or 4WD and move. Even if you end up living there for one year it would be an amazing experience. Telluride in the summer is worth the snowy winter.

Moved my family back here from a ski resort town in the high country in Colorado. Kids grew up snowboarding. It was awesome for about eight years, then the kids got tired of snow on the ground for seven months of the year. They LOVE Baton Rouge, lol. It was a fun adventure though and I highly recommended.

The big city in winter is much worse. Snowstorms actually disrupt lifestyle there.
