Who has intentionally watched a sub-titled (CC) foreign movie in entirety?

I never had until about 2 yrs ago, at least all the way through. Had no idea how many good films are out there that I've never seen or even heard of. I have seen a few that were dubbed in English, but have found the best way is to hear the dialogue in native language. After a few minutes, if the movie is good, i.e. the story, actors, cinemantography, etc., you soon get lost in suspended disbelief and don't even notice or get distracted by the close captioning. I happened upon this when HBO Max was delayed on Roku, so on a whim tried Criterion Channel because it's extra heavy just on movies, not because I wanted foreign movies in paricular. Happy I discovered this new treasure trove of good movies.

I have. Multiple times.
Sometimes the dubs are just terrible.

Absolutely. Parasite and Old Boy are two Korean movies that are definitely worth seeing. Pan's Labyrinth (Spanish subtitles) is one of my favorite movies of all time.

I’ve only done it accidentally

I only watch dubs if it’s animated. Dubs for live action is wonky.
I also turn on CC for movies/shows even in English. Plenty of unclear lines said that I won’t miss now. Including some funny background character lines.

I've done this regularly since college. I'll tell you what I can't watch, foreign movies dubbed into English (except old kaiju movies).

This... especially with a toddler in the house I rarely watch anything without CC on.

There are lots of must see foreign language movies. Dubs are too distracting.
Just about everyone I know has seen Life is Beautiful.

Some of the movies that have made the largest impact on me have been foreign language movies. City of God immediately comes to mind, shite was wild

Same here, often in fact. I've noticed that the U.S. made movies from the 40's thru 60's more or less have very clean and easy to hear dialogue. Strange. Lots of mumbling, unclear dialogue nowadays imo

I want to see that, thx for reminder, but just checked Criterion Channel and not available, at least yet, hope they rotate it in.

Saw Parasite recently, very good. Another Korean I saw few days ago, In the Mood for Love, which has got to be the lushest cinematography I can recall, won many top awards. Old Boy, need to check on that, thx.

Nearly every time I watch a foreign film.
Dubs are nearly universally bad.
There are an insane number of good foreign movies.
I recently started getting into the samurai genre again and I’m expanding my Akira Kurosawa movies.
I have Yojimbo and Sanjuro coming in Monday and I will likely pick up more soon.

I had always avoided foreign films because of captioning, thinking it was odd way to watch a movie and that I wouldn't like. Ten lashes for my ignorance with wet noodles!

Kung Fu Hustle is notably better and way funnier in its original sub-titles than it is dubbed in English (also one of my personal favorite movies.)
I prefer to watch films in their foreign language and read the sub-titles than crappy dubs.
