Most of them do, but the navy gets what they want and doesn't worry about the price. Container ships/icebreakers/supply boats/etc are all privately owned and therefor built strictly to be profitable. A nuclear powered ship would never pay for itself unless it was given to you, which im pretty sure is how the few privately owned nuclear ships came to be.

We will be using oil for the next 100 years.

battery technology

Dude.
I was a Department of Energy funded researcher.

There isn't this massive amount of R&D spending in batteries etc.
If there were, I'd be able to write my ticket.

EVs have become somewhat mainstream.

However, there are major hurdles in terms of raw materials for batteries (these materials compete with cell phones, TVs etc) in addition to growth in Asia and Africa.

I don't work in O&G but can assure you, it isn't going anywhere for a long long time.

Liberal pipe dream.

Just tell them lithium development for electric car batteries is endangering a rare mole species in Chile and they'll have a nervous breakdown.

There hasn't been a revolutionary break through in energy since we discovered O&G. Until there is another we won't be adapting alts unless the government forces us to.

You probably don’t realize this given your insights so far in this thread but for every vehicle in developed nations that transitions from gas-powered to EV over next 10-20 years there will be a 10x rate in developing nations like India and China where people buy their very first vehicle.

The vehicles these people buy will not be EVs. They’ll be diesel and gasoline powered.

You'd have to put nuclear in there. Its a major contributor to the power grid in many places.

If you could rub your crystal ball and figure out what to focus on next youd be the next bezos, but O&G aint going away. Its by far the cheapest way to store energy and do work and all other avenues have a very long uphill battle to compete.

As I said earlier, if you pulled the subsidies on alternative energy, they'd go away overnight. They cost to much for the work you get out of them.

I'd be interested to know if those conversions were subsidized or not though
I don’t think subsidized but these service companies don’t spend millions on these types of upgrades just because they feel like it. They do it because that’s what the client (oil majors) wants. So the question is why would oil companies want fuel savings via hybrid power when they have a vested interest in increased fuel consumption.

I'm talking really big picture. If we didn't develop a means to cheap energy and agriculture we could not have grown into a wealth factory like we are. Nuclear hasn't changed the course of human history.

Nuclear can't be revolutionary until its economical on a mass scale. That's why I find it hilarious these cultist think that highly subsidised alts that require stable forms of energy from O&G/Nuclear to be used for power generation is efficient.

Edit: I just said something stupid. It's economical it's just not used like it should be because muh environment.

So its not government subsidized, the customer is ultimately footing the bill. At least their putting their money where they claim their priorities are.

I know working off of the west coast has some crazy requirements and that is likely a driver. The west coast has lots of people who spend all day looking for a ship to blackstack so they can go run them off.

O&G is going to get hammered over the next 10 years as more and more electric vehicles come online

And where do you think that electricity comes from?

Natural gas.

And where does natural gas come from?

The same wells that crude comes from. The crude to gas ratios vary but they come from the same sources.

When you extract crude and natural gas together you don’t just pump the crude back into the ground. Especially considering you have the means to pump directly to refinery via pipeline.

If anything, more electric cars means higher natural gas demand and lower gasoline demand. Which also means higher electric bills and lower gasoline prices

Electric vehicles that require fossil fuels to exist. And fuel. And maintain.
O&G isn't going anywhere.

Well let's see.

Charging a model X tesla @ 11.5kW from empty to full takes about 11.5 hours (30mi/hr with 350 mile range).

A good solar panel will make about 15W per square foot. Football field is 57,600 sq ft. So a whole football field of solar panels could theoretically make 864kW. So while an extreme example, you could in fact charge your tesla with a solar panel football field.

Oil, the commodity is not going anywhere anytime soon.

But investing your money O&G companies right is not bright.
We have been on a bull market run under Trump, but the energy sector has lagged big time. Expect that general trend to continue.
