A Florida Sheriff Launched An Algorithm To Predict Who Will Commit Crime

It didn't work that well.

A central Florida sheriff built an algorithm meant to predict which people in his jurisdiction were likely to commit a crime in the future.
But according to a six-month investigation published this week by The Tampa Bay Times, the high-tech tool deployed by the Pasco County Sheriff's Office didn't lead to a reduction in violent crime — instead, dozens of families singled out by the algorithm said they were routinely harassed by deputies, even when there was no evidence of a specific crime.
In September of 2019, deputies reportedly showed up at 15-year-old Rio Wotjecki's door because the algorithm had determined that Wotjecki was one of the county's "Top 5" at risk of committing more crimes.
Before that, Wotjecki had only been arrested one time, a year prior, for sneaking into a carport and stealing motorized bicycles. He served time in juvenile detention for that offense, and hadn't committed any subsequent crimes — but because of the algorithm, police showed up at Wotjecki's house to question him at least 21 times beginning with that September visit, Wotjecki's mother told The Tampa Bay Times.

How did the consulting company that pitched and sold this idea manage to stay out of the news.
It would have been hilarious to be there when they were doing the sales pitch.

Was it like when the google algorithm showed a couple of black people under gorillas?

The kid can’t commit crimes when the sheriff is all up in his business.
They ruined the results by interference.

No surprise the Florida Man precogs were wrong every time.

It works! If the police had not shown up at the kids house 21 times, he would have committed crimes. Those visits kept him at bay. It worked! Ha

Looks like his algorithm avoided riots, but also reduced tensions in the community. Fortunately he minimized aspects for some people and focused only to on those with Eastern European last names
Unfortunately the sample pool was far too restrictive to be effective, and the results were embarrassing. Fortunately nobody gives AF because it’s only caucasians getting harassed.
They add some gang affiliations factors, and shite gonna get real, and the city’s settling racial profiling suits. ....and who knows how much more effective the algorithm proves to be
