BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The man who was shot in the parking lot of Trader Joe’s in Baton Rouge had been aggressively panhandling at the time, a source familiar with the investigation says.
As of Monday afternoon, the Baton Rouge Police Department, still declined to give any specifics on the case or comment on a particular motive.
The shooting happened Saturday evening in the parking lot of the store located in the 3500 block of Perkins Road.
Police say Danny Buckley, 61, was shot and later died at a hospital.

A source familiar with the case told WAFB-TV Buckley was begging for money in the store’s parking lot.

The Baton Rouge Business Report quoted sources as saying the shooter fired in self-defense because he and his wife felt threatened by Buckley.
Monday afternoon, police said the investigation is still ongoing and the bystander has not been charged in the case.

Good thing the guy protected themselves because people are crazy out there. I made the mistake of going to the Shell gas station on Siegen Ln next to Sports Academy on Saturday and I had 7 different panhandlers beg me for money. The last two were pissed that I didn’t give them anything.

Is that a creative term for robbery?

No, excessive panhandling is the term used just before it escalates to the next level, which is "unexpected sudden donation". We don't use the term "robbery" anymore. You should really keep up.

Guy has a reputation for not liking the word “no”. Not sure what transpired here but I know several people he’s yelled at for being told to piss off. He’s been working that area for 20+ years.

Such a shame how bad BR has gotten. Had the time of my life there in college but as I get older, 4 or 5 game days a year are more than enough.

when the panhandlers moved in.

probably about the time the big homeless encampment popped up between Bluebonnet and Siegen.

when the homeless people set up a tent city between bluebonnet and Seigen. I get people need help and don't mind helping where i can but when there is a person at every corner and most of them are texting on their phone while holding a need help sign it gets really hard to trust whether they really need help or if they really just trying to swindle people

Whenever I see a bum about to ask me for money I always ask first. The look in their eyes is priceless.

If not, why is this newsworthy?
