Anyone else a naivete when it comes to interpreting art?

I simply cannot dissect it.
Show me a piece worth $600k and similar one worth $600 and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
I've taken a few classes and did ok and been to museums, but having the ability to let's say, "feel the emotions of the art/artist" is something I simply can't grasp.

There’s nothing to dissect with most modern art. The difference between the $600k and the $600 piece is name recognition and how much they can be about it.

You know that famous Jackson Pollack that's nothing but paint splatters? Seemingly anybody could do it, but if I tried it it would come out looking like a mess of splattered paint. There's something intangible about good art. You may not know what it is but you can tell.
This doesn't apply to all art of course. Some of it is just crap that the avante garde arent willing to admit is crap.

I don't understand most of it either. I know what I like. I like some things that others hate. Then there are pieces that everyone loves and I just look at it and think it's ugly and tacky.
I'll never understand how some of the shite ends up being valued as much as it is when it is just horrible.

I'm with you, OP. Although I will say that what people find so great about art is one reason I don't care for it that much. If I have to stare at something forever and try to figure out what the artist was "trying to represent" or what it means to me, I lost interest usually.
Not to mention that a lot of times I honestly feel like "art" is a complete sham and people are just pushing boundaries of how stupid society is. Like the dude who taped the banana on the wall at that art show and then it sold for like six figures. It's also shown in that Banksy documentary too. People are stupid, and art is one arena where they will pay top dollar to show how stupid they are because something is perceived as cool or trendy.

I almost posted two pictures. Asking if you could tell the difference.
One of a sexy Asian woman in a bikini to where you can tell she is a woman.
And the other would have been an Asian ladyboy with an obvious package bulge.
I didn't want to search for that pic though so I'm just telling you about it.

That's because a lot of art, especially in 2020, is absolute horse shite. Anyone who pretends that smeared and splattered paint is some kind of next level meaningful thing is just not telling the emperor about his new clothes.

Modern art. I can tell what good classical art is, but modern/abstract art I just cannot get.
Except for kinetic sculptures/mobiles. Those are neat

Nobody can. It's pure marketing.

buy what appeals to you
but always say, "there's truth to this piece, but no logic"

I can't really appreciate most modern art.
