my father in law, who has one of the biggest coin collections i have even seen, strongly believes the government is trying to force the country into a digital currency and totally do away with paper and coin money.

It’s a circulation issue. It’s not a money supply issue. Also, there are certain regions that are paying a bit more than what the coins are worth in order to not have to adjust pricing, round up, or round down.

There is a coin shortage because it actually cost you money to get rid of it.

I have tons of change right now. Probably in the 1K range. The only way I have to cash it in is to take it to Publix and use the machine which keeps like 5% of the total. Just dumb

Banks have not wanted to take it so I just keep pilling it up

Anyone who actually has amex would know that. Also amex black isn't prestigious as it used to be, there are tons of better credit cards now.

Got a message from a bank a couple weeks ago basically begging for coins.

Took a few ziplocks full and dropped them off. Really doubt the branch has a counting machine, so I'm guessing they did it manually.

Got a call a few hours later saying it was over several hundred dollars.

My FIL bought a pool table with one of these about 20 years ago. He said it took him like 6 years to fill. He had a separate one for pennies and the other was quarters, dimes, and nickels.

store public machines would reduce their charge

charging 10% to swap coins for bills is al capone level extortion and the banks only take coins now as a deposit not to exchange

add to that about 40% of the dimes get counted as pennies in those machines and you just have to bend over and take it because there is no getting the coins back and canceling it. i went with just a handful of dimes i precounted as $20 worth and i got $12 and change saying it was half pennies. now i just dump them on the girl at the register because thats about the only way left to use them and get full value

I wonder what the average amount saved in those giant bottles is.

If you have that much, you should probably just buy a little coin counter thing.

I randomly use the coins i end up with to buy shite at the gas station so i don't have a huge stack but i have a frickload of pennies i should take to the grocery story. Probably like $30 worth or so

I guess I’m a poor, but I took my Kentwood 5gal water jug full of coins and damn near paid for my whole honeymoon. It also had plenty actual paper bills mixed in it too.

I have a friend who works at the Atlanta reserve. I asked him and he scoffed. He said there isn't any shortage at all. He said coinstar's weren't turning in their coins for some reason and that caused a scare at the height of the stay at home period. Maybe he's lying to me to try and get MY coins to make money. But I doubt it.

I can't speak from authority here because I have never worked at a bank, but I'm gonna call bullshite here because literally the only thing banks do is count money.

Also last time I brought a pile of change to the bank they told me don't bother wrapping them myself because they were just going to bust them open and count/weigh/re-wrap themselves.

The local coin drives will stir the old jars containing the still-circulating coins I like to collect back into circulation.

Excellent.
