Thinking about starting a new career. Is night school a possibility? Advantages? Disadvantages?

Options for night school are probably very limited, much of the training is hands on in a clinical setting. MRI, CT, or Nuclear medicine tech jobs are in my opinion the better place to be, Pay at major medical centers is equal to that of RNs. My former profession put me in radiology departments on a regular basis.

Where do you live? BRCC and Our Lady both have programs in BR. LSU Eunice and LSU Alexandria both have them as well.

Tons of jobs right now. Can pretty much go most places and name your price and signing bonus. Some schools very small and hard to get in to. Decent Science and math skills a must.

Take up welding.High demand,good money.

This country is starving for workers who aren't scared of getting dirty.

A welder can make six figures if willing to travel.

There are jobs out there, too many aren't willing to grow a pair to work them.

This is why we have to import workers.

I graduated from the OLOL college. It’s two years of class and clinicals. You will be required to have certain prerequisites before applying. I worked in surgery for a few year’s and have been in the cath lab the last 7. Money’s good especially if your willing to take call. I really started enjoying it when I made it to the cath lab. You’ll just have to figure out what you want to do.

Before doing Nuclear Med Tech id talk to an actual Nuclear Med Tech. They had way too many med techs grading and not many job openings as of 4 years ago. Also the labs are expensive and because of Obama care they weren't doing as many jobs as in past. It's a pretty rigorous course and the ceiling pay isn't very high for most hospitals. Never heard of anyone making over a 100k so his Ex seems in a unique situation from the nuc techs I knew. Don't trust the schools b.s.

Ultrasound tech is probably a decent, less stressful alternative.

Depending on where you live it can be kind of a competitive field to get into. Once in, it opens up to a ton of Allied fields associated with it to specialize like NM, US, Rad Therapy, CT, MRI, Cath Lab, Spec procedures etc...

That said, being an Xray technologists can be kind of boring and repetitious unless you work at a major trauma hospital or surgery center. There is constant pressure to be registered and stay that way with continuing medical education (like nurses, therapists, etc...)

Doing portables can be tough on your back and the radiologists can be absolute pricks. Usually, there is at least one a-hole in every group.

Anyway, the pay is OK, not great. Some specialties make bank though. Usually, radiology departments have some fun characters to horse around with.

a buddy of mine got a nuclear med tech degree in about the time it takes to get a rad tech and he started out around $90k. This was early-mid 2000s, so it may be different now.

Rad techs around LA are looking at $20-30. Moral of the story, move away if you're from here.

MBA holding Rad Tech here. 20+ years in the industry. Published journal author and industry representative. Before leaving the industry I managed 200+ employees at a nationally ranked healthcare system.

Pros - You’ll be hard pressed to find a job that pays as well with only two years of education at a community college.

Cons - you can’t stop at two years, gotta specialize and get that BS if you truly wanna move up or have advancement opportunities.

On-Call pays well; but, only if you are in a sleepy town where call backs are infrequent. Otherwise it’s a living hell. The top end of the spectrum is $80-100K. Maybe more in high cost of living cities in the Northeast or West Coast. Wanna travel to cover maternity leave or live on a compound in Qatar? That pays well too.
