The drawback is that those things that Houston has for locals to do are had by literally every other city of remotely similar size. They’re not unique to Houston, and people don’t have to come to Houston, and only Houston, to experience them.
I'm not saying it's unique.
I'm saying if you have a great job opportunity that brings you to Dallas or Houston, there's plenty of things there to do and enjoy. I would say the job opps in good industries with no state income tax would be the "unique" draw to those cities.

There’s a lot of dishes there that are not duplicated in restaurants in other places. New Orleans architecture is largely one-of-a-kind. There’s no other city that looks like it. New Orleans jazz is duplicated in some other places (largely by Louisiana ex-pats), but the frequency and variety is pretty much only found in the city. Thus, people go to New Orleans to experience these things because they cannot have a similar experience anywhere else.
New Orleans isn't the only city with things that are unique to the city though which was my point. There are things unique to San Francisco, NYC, Miami, etc that you won't find anywhere else. We don't have to act like New Orleans is the only city with its own unique culture or identity.

The sandbar isn’t a geologic formation, it’s a bar.
It’s not that partying is unique, but the party itself is different from parties enjoyed elsewhere. I recommend trying it out before you write it off.

I usually defend Louisiana in these threads but not every single thing is so unique and special

I left Louisiana in the broad daylight and living somewhere else is so much easier and better that you won't understand until you do it. If you want to show your kids culture, you can travel. frick Louisiana.

You're missing my point entirely. I am not saying that New Orleans is the only unique city. In fact, I'm trying to say the opposite. There are many cities that are unique with clear identities. I was highlighting New Orleans as an example of a city with a clear identity which attracts people who want to experience that identity. This was done in order to show that an identity with a unique culture is what Houston lacks. Houston is unique in that it is NOT unique, and may be the least unique large city in the Western World.
I am saying that for Houston to remain competitive long term, it will need to develop some unique cultural characteristics and experiences to act as a draw in the case that somewhere else becomes more economically attractive either due to dumb politicians trying to make Houston more "progressive" or due to some other place building a better economic model.

I'm not arguing otherwise.

Most places I've gone, boat party culture is kinda classy. It's the weird mix of loaded and unbelievably trashy that makes the Cajun Riviera experience one of a kind. I mean, you see the most LP shitte ever out there. I have seen feats of trashiness and ratchet I did not believe the human body was capable of. I just can't imagine these entertaining trainwrecks of humanity taking place anywhere else.

I moved from south la to Wichita, Ks 3 years ago. Some days it’s tough. I miss the people and culture and everything. But I’m never gonna move back. Everything else here is so much better

Yeah man, Houston has a lot of catching up to do with New Orleans

Houston is just a giant version of Baton Rouge with more jobs and better suburbs.
This is the most true statement.

I moved back home to NY and the toughest challenge was the “food culture” and the “drinking culture” (ie no drive through daiquiris, bars open past 2AM, and no drinks before noon on Sundays)
Otherwise, there’s all four seasons, the landscape/vistas are breathtaking, the people are similarly pleasant, and there’s a ton more shite to do. Tons of lakes, boating, hiking, etc.
That said, I’m just outside of Rochester, NY... so it’s ~6+hrs from NYC which is a WHOLE different world.
It’s beautiful here.
Your question begs another question; Why leave LA now? where are you proposing on moving? Do you have a family? A job lined up?
All this said, I absolutely loved my nearly 2 decades living in LA and grew to call it home for a number of reasons...
Fun fact: 3 out of 4 people born in LA, never leave LA, and then die in LA.

He visited his relatives in Katy once and thinks all big cities are like that minus New Orleans and Nashville.
