Left in 1990 and hadn’t missed a beat. Different cultures but cultured nonetheless.

How many times are y’all going to do this thread? I’m not even from Louisiana but every time this thread comes up it’s a constant pat yourself on the back party for moving to fricking Texas.

Once again, I’m sayin the opposite of that. New Orleans has its own unique draws like most large, dense, pre-WWII cities. Chicago has identify, Portland has identity, Denver, Pittsburg, Indy, Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbus, Miami, Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington, Minneapolis, Milwakuee, Detroit, Richmond, Philly, Boston, San Diego, all have identity and institutions and recipes unique to them. Heck, even Salt Lake City has more identity than Houston! Houston is different than most other cities because it lacks identity. Houston is Uniquely non-distinct, like muzac. It’s not hip or uncool. It’s not trendy or classic, or nostalgic, or progressive, or natural, it just exists as the ultimate generic. It lacks experiences that can only be had there which draw people to the city for reasons other than salary to cost of living ratio. That’s all I’m saying.

It comes up about once per month.

More like once a week. It always turns into a Houston vs New Orleans vs Baton Rouge pissing match when all three places suck arse.

there is a whole new world of opportunity out of LA, embrace it, you can always go back and visit but I guarantee
1) the longer you are away, the more you will appreciate where you moved to, except SE Texas, still way too close and the culture is the same
2) you will be able to tolerate LA less each visit unfortunately
3) your visits will be shorter and less frequent unfortunately...
100% agree! The Mrs and I moved about 10yrs ago and never looked back. I go in at Thanksgiving and maybe 1 or 2 LSU games year.

I'm finally leaving south Louisiana. For anyone else who left was it tough to live somewhere else? This seems like a different planet compared to other parts of US. I know a lot of people who went to Houston, and they like it. Quality of school, healthcare is better, but there is not the LA culture. Plenty of transplants, but still if I have kids they won't get to see a lot of it.
I’m very late to this thread, OP, but I’ll give you the same advice I always give when this thread comes up.
Just move. That’s not a knock on Louisiana, I think it’s sound advice for anyone who has never left their home state. It’s a big country and world out there, and if you have the chance to expand your horizons and see what’s out there, you should do it.
I moved for what was supposed to be a two year period. That was seven years ago and we recently bought a home so we have zero plans to leave at this point.
Home isn’t going anywhere. If you decide you want to return home that’s always an option.

Wrong... no one bats for BR in these threads
re: Leaving Lousiana?Posted by kingbob on 7/10/20 at 2:04 pm to GreatLakesTiger24
There were always a few white knights back in the Kipster era, but not so much anymore. BR is f$&king depressing, and I’m one of the biggest BR homers out there.

Best decision I ever made. Miss some family and friends, but the quality of life has been just better in every aspect.
Houston was the first stop.
Austin was the second.
Denver is the third.
Next will be a large piece of property in southern Colorado or southern Wyoming.

How in 2020 do people not know how to type?

I tried to find a job in Denver. I got through three rounds of interviews and didn’t get the job. I’m still kinda heartbroken about it. I’m thinking about signing up for the February bar exam there and getting serious about relocating

I like Denver but real estate is expensive as hell around there. I'm too old to start a new 600k mortgage or whatever. If we left the state, it would likely be somewhere with comparable to slightly higher COL.

I was pretty happy to find out Knoxville is even cheaper than BR. At least in terms of housing costs.

Small town Vermont.

Yeah, I'd want to be in a spot to put our equity from the current house into a new one and not extend the date it would be paid off.
It could be a more expensive place but not double. I want it paid off by my mid 50s or so.

I fortunately ended up with a global technology, data and information company and somehow have made my way up the lower end ranks pretty quickly. We have a big office in Denver that I was able to get the green light to work out of. Then this virus hit and we closed about 40% of the global office space for good. So I’ll likely never go back to the office anyway (half of my team in in Calgary and the other half is in Scotland), hence my next move to a large property in the middle of nowhere.
This virus really has changed the way technology companies work.
