Small town Vermont.

That would be fine for me. Remote work has been pretty common in my field for a long time.

Yeah, I'd want to be in a spot to put our equity from the current house into a new one and not extend the date it would be paid off.

It could be a more expensive place but not double. I want it paid off by my mid 50s or so.

We bought about 2x the square footage for less than 1.5x the sales price of our BR house. And I'm right on that schedule.

Leaving Lousiana?

Grew up there and worked there for eight years after college. I missed the duck hunting but I hear it isn't good anymore. I don't miss it. I have no family there. I live on a lake in retirement in East Texas. It's a paradise. I'd suggest making the most of where you live. My forebears came to the United States from other countries. Now that is a change.

Edit...I’ll add as well that each time we go back home, we’re shocked more and more by the shear filth everywhere in LA. Garbage lines the roads, the ditches, parking lots, it’s everywhere you look. LA is beautiful and it’s sad people just don’t give a shite.

If Louisiana could just fix THIS it would be 100 times better to live here.

And yet Houston is the most diverse city in the country.

Been in Kansas City for nearly 4 years. No sir, it is not tough at all. I would not move back to Louisiana if my kids were still in school and/or we needed jobs. It has become a place to visit and a potential retirement location for us.

I never learned typing it was for girls. Hey that was the way it was back then. Do you have reading comprehension issues or what, and I was replying to the dude who was moving. What was the problem Did I not proof read, commas other punctuation issues? Did I not double space. How about just put tldr. Have a great day Mango

Haven’t regretted it in 30 years. If you don’t want Houston, Dallas or east Texas, but still want to stay in the south, the area in the upper SE: east TN, north GA, western Carolinas and northeast AL gives you 4 seasons (with a light winter), hills/mtns, clean lakes and a variety of industries that are not O&G or Petrochemical.

I wonder if there’s any other state, municipality, or nation that ever had a really successful campaign to reduce litter which we could use as a model here?

Just google Houston and diversity.

Not sure why you are having a hard time believing that.

I googled as well, unsurprisingly many different rankings. I certainly think it's very diverse and up there in rankings, #1 seems surprising to me. That's all. Not really hating on Houston.

This. People act like Houston is nothing but rednecks Mexicans and black people. It’s definitely in the top 5 for most diverse metros. Idiots.

it would have to include/start with a routine cleaning/removal of litter, which i don't see happening here.

Its weird cause we all make comments about Florida trash, but i find Florida a very clean state. Louisiana is a trashy (litter) place, but so was Phoenix, Glendale, Chicago, and NYC when i visited. The ATL metro was clean when i lived there (80s/90s)

With a poster name like that, I wouldn't advise going any further than Houston.

Seeing the “but the food” thing on here for all these years really says a lot.

It’s an absurd criteria to hold so tightly to as some justification for a place to live. Good food is everywhere, really. Great types of cuisine all over.
But that’s not the point! Who gives a frick about food spice level when you are talking about overall quality of life. Salary, education, healthcare, etc. all supremely important to a life and future. Crawfish Acadiana tastes great
.. who gives a shite.

Apparently, a lot if it keeps popping up as a reason why people don’t want to leave

Some people eat to live, and others live to eat.

People in Louisiana have a very poor understanding of what food is like outside of Louisiana. It’s like they believe leaving the state that everything is just steamed or boiled gruel with no seasoning.

The reality is that most people in Louisiana feel a deep connection to the place and don’t want to leave, but the schools, economy, traffic, weather, drainage, infrastructure, etc is just so infuriatingly shitty.

I went from Metairie to Savannah to Houston to Denver route. Denver is a paradise. Only thing it lacks is a big body of salt water. unfortunately, a death in the family has me looking at house down here right now.
