White--check
Christian--check

And notoriously anti-Semetic.

Luther wrote a book in 1543 titled "The Jews and their Lies". In it, he advised the German leadership how to handle the "Jewish problem" in their midst. Here were his ideas:

1. "The synagogues should be set on fire."
2. "Jews should not be allowed to own houses; instead they should be placed in a stable like Gypsies."
3. "All Jewish prayer books and Talmuds should be taken away since they teach lying, cursing, and blaspheming."
4. "Rabbis should be prohibited from teaching under threat of losing body and soul."
5. "Protection of Jews on highways should be revoked so they will stay at home."
6. "Jewish usury should be prohibited."
7. "Young, strong Jews should be forced to earn their bread by the sweat of their brows, flailing axes and spindles."
8. Luther concluded his list with the following statement: "To sum up, dear princes and nobles who have Jews in your domains, if this advice of mine does not suit you, then find a better one so that you and we may all be free of this insufferable devilish burden called the Jews."

In one form or another, everything Luther advocated, Hitler implemented.

Yet we have numerous buildings, institutions, even branches of an entire denomination named for him. So when does the renaming start?

Well every Protestant faith will need to close up shop then. Catholicism won in the end.

They're named after a man named after him.

Why across centuries and different countries with people who have had no interaction with one another do the same specific "tropes and canards" always appear against this group of people?

Luther's punishment has been the number of homo's and lesbians ordained into the Lutheran Church.

Martin Luther King Jr. changed his name from Michael to Martin after his father adopted the name Martin in honor of the Protestant leader Martin Luther.

Nah, we Baptists are fine. We named ourselves after someone in the Bible.

And there are branches of Baptists who claim an unbroken line of dissenting against Catholicism before the Protestant Reformation.

Usury and a strong emphasis on education.

Only Lutherans would need to close up shop, given that they bear his name. Luther did some good things in moving the Church away from the age of the Catholic church making law, and doing so based on their own opinions, rather than scripture. The reformation was about returning to scripture.

That said, Luther, himself, as well as John Calvin and a few others, had some interpretations of scripture that are not coherently supported in the context of the entire Bible. And some of them, like Luther and Calvin, could be quite cruel in certain areas.

But most Protestants don't subscribe to Luther's specific interpretations. So I don't think most people would make such a connection if they go after Luther.

In response to the OP, though, Luther's anti-semitic leanings are of no interest to the left. They have never had sympathy for the Jews. Not even the fake kind of sympathy they have for blacks. Unless Luther said something negative about blacks, no one is coming after him.

Different historical context. Religion and state were intertwined and Luther’s disdain was for their religion. He wanted them to convert to Christianity but they would blaspheme Christ and set him off.

It’s a shame the man ever existed but he’s part of history and should be remembered, albeit as a cautionary tale more than anything else. He was the biggest heretic this side of Arius.

Ironically, Luther originally set out to befriend jews and live among them. Guess he changed his mind.

I have a high respect for Luther. I have a picture of him in my office. I’m also fully aware of his anti-semitism and I detest that part of who he was. I know it’s a complicated concept to honor a person for one thing while disagreeing with them on other things but that’s always worked for me concerning these imperfect historical figures.

I would be very willing to purge Calvin. He had his enemies murdered.
