I'm late, but still going to bore you all with my thoughts.
Turkey and the Wolf did have that black guy that was tall and skinny. Not sure if he's still there, and y'all are right I've never seen another black employee there or at Courtyard
@melatmidnight is super entertaining, but I don't support what they're doing. Disgruntled employees are suspect at best. Also, some of the shite they're "putting on blast" isn't even racist or sexist. "They were open for takeout during the pandemic and expected me to work". Well, imagine that. Your employer expected you to work. I'm so over people bitching about their employer not letting them collect unemployment.
I don't agree with shitting on a business or person that cannot defend themselves. Even those that issued apologies or sought to deny what was being claimed were shut out.
Fortunately, seems to be dying out. And the vast majority of the customers don't GAF about that page.
Deleted Polly a few weeks ago. Couldn't handle the 24-7 whining. Besides what already was posted, I had a really hard chuckle that she posted her home cooking for WEEKS leading up to the virus.. claiming it was for her employees for when shite hit the fan. Then when things started closing up, she was fighting the ABC because she thought she should be allowed to sell her rando arse home cooking to the general public.
My clients have to get health permits for their businesses, so I'm somewhat informed on the varying logistics in counties across the US. Never in my life have I seen a health department that would approve food cooked in your home for sale to the general public out of your restaurant/bar.

I don’t know crap about the IG apology or supposed controversy, but DD is the epitome of terrible customer service if you’re not in “their” demographic. I’m, ahem, mature, and the attitude, condescension, and general IDGAF I’d get from the staff there is radically different than what my 28-ish coworker sees when he picks up my order. I’d walk in and buy plenty—enough for a meeting, repeatedly, and the eye rolls were bad. So I quit going there—-it was made abundantly clear to me that my business wasn’t wanted.
I never got crappy attitude from the little DD on Magazone St by Whole Foods, so maybe it’s just a tone set by managers?

I frequent the one on Harrison Ave in lakeview and don't get any of that attitude. Just nice people.

Turkey has or had multiple black workers. In the end, you can only hire from the people who apply to your restaurant.
I will say, It is cringey how they are currently going out of their way to pretend like they care about eating at black owned restaurants. A lot of them just don’t make quality food, it’s not a black or white thing - which will end up being the next issue I’m sure. They need a fair opportunity to make good food

Yep. Just said this in the Bachelor thread. People calling for Bon Appetit to hire people from random African countries to be on their videos and I'm just wondering how many Ethiopians are lined up to be a video personality at BA.

They released a list of black owned restaurants here in BR. Its all the same style of food, which is home cooking type of food. I'm not above a plate of that food, but lets call it what it is. Melting 2lbs of Velveeta into cooked spaghetti noodles is not exactly culinary genius. Nor is a menu of sides that are just heated canned vegetables with seasoning.
Y'all have seen me go off on people here trying to pretend to be a white guy "in the know" because they go to lesser known black owned joints.

Idk, it seems like these posts pandering to the black community and the overt effort to make these places inclusive isn’t going to end well. It’s almost more insulting to them
Do it organically without talking about it imo. I don’t think it’s this big conversation that needs to be had. You can only do so much monetarily in a restaurant. The margins are too slim. It’ll take a whole reworking of the system to pay people more. Ethically speaking, doesn’t it start with just not being a shitty person?

What can you really do, though (asking this towards the people demanding change)? If black people aren't applying for employment at a particular business or in a particular industry, what can you really do?
Imagine if these businesses start putting out ads for black employees wanted. Besides the fact that it would fall solidly under discrimination, I feel like black people would be offended at that because they aren't interested in being someone's quota or diversity hire.
There's a big difference in qualified black candidates being turned down vs. simply not having black applicants.
I agree that the dramatic apologies are stupid, though. Continue to live your life not being racist and don't get too caught up in this kind of stuff. But then again, I don't know anything about this place. If it caters to hipsters (who tend to be left leaning), their business might be on the line if they don't speak up.
Some of the other places they've called out, like DD and Link restaurants, will be just fine ignoring it.

I’m not surprised by this. At some point many of us have worked in the service industry in some capacity, and this site tends to skew white in my limited experience. I’d wager that many of us have not worked in a service industry position where we would have been the only white person surrounded by people of color. I’m making an assumption here, but why haven’t we applied for those jobs? Possibly because we would feel out of place? That’s probably the experience of people of color in primarily white establishments, I’d guess, and probably why they aren’t lining up to apply.
I don’t think the move is hire one person of color and call it a day, you hire a diverse staff, and you put it out there that such hiring practices are your goal. It’s not about fulfilling quotas, but bringing in different types of people, and empowering them to use their voices for the betterment of the business. You don’t just put people of color in the front of the house for visibility, but have people of color throughout the business where they organically fit. I’d support a place that hired in that way. But, again, I’m probably in the minority here, and I’m definitely out of my depth speculating about hiring practices. Not a small business owner, so I’m just trying to think of what could work in an ideal world.

Neglected to mention that my service issues were all experienced at the Elmwood location, not any other sites.
RE: Bon Appetit, they don't need to look far to find diversity. The NYC public schools have more than 1 million students speaking 176 different languages. I gotta say, this statement:

is pretty tone deaf. Ethiopian food is excellent, widely known and distinctive as a cuisine. there are probably dozens and dozens of trained culinarians of Ethiopian descent in the greater NYC area who would jump at the chance for screen time at BA. But someone at BA decided that brown faces making brown food weren't interesting. It's not because they can't find diverse people interested in being on screen. That's just laughable.
Frankly, I'm waiting for a decent, multi-ethnic food publication (e or print or hybrid) to come out of this. I'd subscribe in a heartbeat, as would many others. So tired of the dumbed down content pitched at people who don't really want to cook or have their POV challenged--they want to be entertained and don't really want to learn anything.

Ultimately, we don't really know. Are Ethiopian culinarians in NYC applying with BA? We don't know. BA hasn't really said.
Another important thing to note is that a lot of BA's staff is comprised of folks in journalism and communications, who have interest in food. Writing for a magazine and appearing on screen is a lot more than being a great cook.
Maybe there are tons of Ethiopian folks with a solid writing/communications background who also have the massive personality to be a video host? Maybe there also aren't Or maybe they're not interested in applying for BA.
I just don't know if I can 100% get behind the idea that these companies are intentionally shying away from people of color, when we aren't really looking into the full picture. (This is generally speaking on hiring specific people - BA has done a lot of other terrible things)
Someone on another thread mentioned that Sohla and Priya's videos are the least watched out of anyone else on the channel. Ultimately, BA is a business. While I do agree they should use their power/influence to make unfamiliar food more recognized, I also can understand why from a business standpoint it wasn't important to them. Businesses usually want to do whatever is the most financially successful. See: Food Network playing Chopped all day long.

If we're using three years as the length, I'd say something like '12-'15 when the Venn Diagram of her pulling beer that nobody else in this market could overlapped with an emerging beer nerd subsection of the market that wanted to drink shite they couldn't get elsewhere. But that's only relevant if you're the type of beer nerd who gave/gives a shite about drinking the "rare" beer. But when it comes to Polly, I generally assume she's doing the right thing. She's shrewd, and I mean that in a complimentary way.
The apex of Avenue Pub was right before breweries were allowed to have their own taprooms in Louisiana. As soon as they could put the special releases out their own door it was the beginning of the slide.

So if individuals aren't applying because they aren't comfortable, how do you suggest these businesses go about hiring diverse individuals?
I just don't see how the scenario you present works. Ultimately, I have to believe (maybe I am wrong), the majority of these small businesses are hiring the best possible candidate for the job. Their livelihood depends on it.
