Charles Barkley reacted to the uproar over New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees’ comments about athletes kneeling during the national anthem, saying he didn’t agree with Brees at all, but found the “vitriol” against him to be “overkill.”

“Drew’s original statement, I thought, was insensitive,” Barkley explained during a panel discussion on NBA on TNT Thursday night.

He went on, “It was very insensitive, especially during this time, but I thought the negative reaction from every talking head on television and some of his teammates was overkill. I’ve never heard a bad word about Drew Brees in my life. He made a mistake but we’ve got to a point in society where everybody on social media thinks they are God, judge and jury.”

The former NBA star then referenced Brees’ charitable giving and hero status in the city where he plays, saying, “But I thought the way he was portrayed on television and radio today was not fair at all. Drew Brees has done some amazing things in New Orleans and in his life. I’m not even talking about football. He made a mistake in a statement.”

“I’m never gonna go with the mob,” he added.

Any rational person would agree with this.

Brees never deserved the backlash he got.

Barkley is absolutely okay in my book.

I posted this on ST, but even Jim Brown has taken the same stance.

quote:

The 82-year-old Brown, who championed civil rights during his playing career and became an activist in retirement, said that he respects players' rights to do what they want but his preference is they would stand during "The Star-Spangled Banner."

"I'll never kneel and I will always respect the flag," said Brown

That's fine if certain people think it's insensitive now, but they asked Brees on the spot and he gave an honest answer.

Brees did not deserve everybody trashing him over it.. not after all he has done. Especially not his own teammates throwing him under the bus. I hate cancel culture so much. I don't even want it for people I disagree with.

Well, I’m glad Charles Barkley said this...I’m not sure why his opinion is suddenly the one everyone cares about, but I guess it’s good nonetheless.

What annoyed me was what Maria Taylor said on Twitter...that “the first time someone shows you who they are, you should listen”. That I don’t get. She’s been in sports media for how long? That was her first impression of drew brees? Probably because she’s a falcons fan and wants him gone.

The Poli Board Mob has already castigated Brees for his apology. There's no coming back from that, Chuck.

Maybe Sean Payton will also retweet this, but that’s as far as he will do. No shot he actually also says something in support of Brees

Can’t lose the woke following he has

Barkley tells shite how it is and doesn't go around pandering for woke points. I respect someone who actually speaks his mind instead of trying to virtue signal the loudest.

Feel like chuck is almost bulletproof. To those who will take offense I don’t think he cares. Will be great if more little white guilt types start lecturing a black guy from Alabama about how he should feel though.

Agree with Barkley on everything said here except for Brees making a “mistake” in his statement. Still don’t understand how he can objectively call what Brees said a mistake.

Yeah, Charles is still saying what he said was wrong, he is just saying you shouldn’t be as hard on him for being wrong. What he should have said was he has his beliefs about the anthem and the flag and while some of us might not share his beliefs nothing about his beliefs are racist.
