And i immediately thought of this movie:

quote:
A US Navy warship has successfully tested a new high-energy laser weapon that can destroy aircraft mid-flight, the Navy's Pacific Fleet said in a statement Friday.
Images and videos provided by the Navy show the amphibious transport dock ship USS Portland executing "the first system-level implementation of a high-energy class solid-state laser" to disable an aerial drone aircraft, the statement said.
And i immediately thought of this movie:
quote:
Mitch: And from now on, stop playing with yourself.
Kent: It is God.

This is a different one than what they used on TWA 800?

Can it destroy a rocket/missile mid air?

That looks like some N. Korean test footage there, lol.

China ain’t worried.
Some socialist liberal democrat will be sending them the specifications ASAP, if the fricking Clintons haven’t already.

I would think so, considering it's a concentrated beam of so many photons that it'll light something ablaze and moves at the speed of light. It also doesn't have to take wind, atmospheric conditions, or travel time into account... it just goes where you point it.
This 150kw version may not be able to "blow up" a missile mid-flight, but I would imagine that it'll at least frick with the guidance system to some degree; and there will be more powerful lasers in the near future, if there aren't already.
I think the ultimate plan is to have them as an automated missile defense system for land and seacraft that'll blast anything out of the sky with just a quick shot of the beam

I thought we've had this for a while now. I'm positive I've seen something about the Air Force putting some on the noses of AWACS planes a few years back.
ETA: This isn't on planes, but the air force successfully shot down drones and destroyed trucks with their ATHENA laser system last year.
Popular Mechanics.

I guess it goes from God, to Jerry, to you, to the cleaners. Right, Kent?

Highly dubious that a single laser can take out hundreds upon hundreds of missiles/drones/etc. with 100% accuracy.

Um yes it does. The speed of light is finite.
