That, and the fact that you have to be extremely reckless to ride a bike on the streets these days. WAYYYY more distracted drivers than in the past. Cell phones are killing more motorcyclist than, I don't know, more than something that kills a lot of motorcyclist.

Are you a handsome chap?

Motorcycles have also become more dangerous because there are more cars on the roads and people are driving distracted more. Both of my parents had road and off-road motorcycles and I had access to the bikes when I was in my 20s, but that was a long time ago. I wouldn't ride a motorcycle on any regular basis now.

Let me rephrase it then, you’re a bitch.

I'd amend it to: The idea that we have Free Market Capitalism is a scam
However, the goober I replied to is pushing for more government control over the economy. Anyone pushing for more government control is statist and authoritarian.

I'm a white biker trailer trash and I bet my dad could beat up your dad.

Their biggest selling bikes are loud and obnoxious gas guzzlers, their lifestyle-esque stores tend to bring out douchers who treat newbs like shite (especially those who don't want the classic bikes), and their attempts at more modern bikes be it electric or gas are way too damn expensive compared to the competition.
My father in law had one before he passed and even he got sick of the way people who rode them tended to act.

Not only are there more distracted drivers, everyone is in a massive vehicle compared to 30 years ago. Economy cars are dead. What passes for a small CUV these days is damn near the size of what used to be a full sized SUV.

What would you call the Chinese buying American companies and moving them overseas?

I'm not into bikes, but calling any bike a gas guzzler just seems comical to me.
40-50mpg ain't breaking anyone's bank. Especially if they are buying a 30k bike.

An Equinox is nowhere near the size of an old school Tahoe.

Have you seen the size of the old Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Lincolns? The small compacts of the 80s are the the exception not the rule.

I've got a friend back home who makes a living mainly as a motorcycle mechanic.
He said the Harley shops look down on anybody that doesn't want to drop thousands on chrome accessories when they buy a bike.

When that old school Tahoe was new, iPhones weren't a thing.
Handheld use while driving should be federally banned. Motorcyclists aren't the only ones being killed by reckless drivers.

A symptom of crony capitalism.
Posted on 5/20/20 at 7:56 pm to Loup
Crony capitalism at its core is defined as being an alliance between the political and corporate class to hoard wealth. When I was talking about immigration being used against the American working class this fits what you're saying and I agree.
But when I am talking about Chinese companies buying American ones this is a combination of both. There is the crony side of it where politicians/regulation agencies get their wheels greased to allow it to happen and then there is the free side of it where a government is unwilling to stop it from happening.
A free market capitalist economy is the government being unwilling to force regulations on private companies or tariffs to protect them from foreign ones. Trump and his tariffs go directly against this traditional free market capitalism.

The tariffs are there to protect companies that due to regulation are not able to make the changes necessary to be competitive. It's not going against free market capitalism, it's reinforcing crony capitalism.
It's too early for this lol

One of my favorite bikes ever was my '85 Honda shadow. The US put a tariff on all bikes 700ccs or larger (Section 202 Tariff), so Honda sleeved down their 750 engines to drop them to 698.9ccs. My Shadow had a shaft drive, 6-speed transmission. It was water-cooled and great handling. It was freaking bulletproof.
An even better bike was the VF700 Sabre...a V-4 shaft drive bike with the same displacement sleeve mod and a 10,500 rpm redline. They weighed right at 500 lbs (wet), got around 50 mpg, and still would top 120 mph.

The only issue is when the goods are only free flowing in one direction. If nation A’s goods can come to nation B with no tariff, but nation A has a 40% tariff on nation B’s goods, that’s not a free market. The goal should be for zero tariffs either direction, but to make trade fair, you get to a point of reciprocal tariffs and then negotiate down from there. You use access to your markets as a carrot and tariffs the stick to get access to their markets in exchange to access to your own. The bigger your domestic market, the more leverage you have. Protecting crappy domestic companies from foreign competitors should never be the goal. The goal should always be to ensure your domestic companies have an even playing field in both your own country and a chance to compete with their competitors on their home turf as well. Then, the best companies will rise to the top.
