Minnesota/Wisconsin (Paul Bunyan's Axe) is quite the rivalry up north. Most-played rivalry in FBS and it extends beyond football.

- Tuition reciprocity allows HS students in each state to attend the universities at the cost of an in-state student. For as many kids in each state going to the flagship university, many of their peers will cross state lines.

- Because of proximity, and where they grew up, graduates from each university work in the region's major metropolitan areas (i.e. Madison, Milwaukee, MSP).

- Both states have strong German and Scandinavian heritage.

- Similarity in culture (i.e. outdoor recreation, lake living, etc.).

- Minnesota and Wisconsin share a border, almost entirely, north/south. Plenty of crossover between the two states, whether it be family, tourism, commuting to work, etc.

- Close ties between college hockey traditions and Packers/Vikings

Clemson-South Carolina
It’s definitely one sided, and doesn’t get a lot of national recognition
But there aren’t many schools that hate eachother as much as these 2 do

Syracuse vs UConn in the 90s and 2000s was the best. Killing the Big East ruined college basketball.

Oregon-Washington
Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry (hard to call it underrated but it’s almost always a great game)
Holy War is very intense
Paul Bunyan’s Axe (maybe it will come into greater prominence with Minnesota being better; Wisconsin has won 24 of the past 30 including 14 straight from 2004 to 2017)

It's supposed to be The Civil War (Oregon vs. Oregon State) but it's really become UW vs. Oregon; both sides hate each other's guts and I don't really know how that all got started.

You should spend more time in Washington. Or pay attention to the bad drivers in Portland - they all have Washington plates.

Dodgers-Reds in the ‘70s was THE rivalry in baseball at that time. The 49ers/Giants/Bears/Redskins/Rams group made the NFC must-see football in the mid-to-late part of the ‘80s.

St. Louis and Boston. The only cities that have faced each other in all of the big four championship series/game (11 times, 7-4 Boston).

Funniest was when a 4-7 Mississippi State team beat the goddamned brakes off a 5-6 Ole Miss team in 2016.

Both teams ended up 5-7, and State kept Ole Miss from being bowl eligible with that loss, but then Mississippi State made a bowl on APR anyway.

I remember in the Gamecock board there was a guy who would post a lot.
He was a UW grad who moved to SC and married a Gamecock.
He became a Gamecock fan but remember him telling us about this when Oregon was in the title game (and why he was not pulling for the Pac 12 in it, although he never did)
It was actually about a Rose Bowl vote, and here it’s the story:

quote:

the rivalry became heated from Oregon's perspective in 1948, when Oregon and California both went undefeated in the Pacific Coast Conference.California was undefeated overall, and Oregon's only loss was at undefeated Michigan, that year's national champions, and the Ducks had seven victories in the PCC to Cal's six. The winner of the PCC, as is today with the Pac-12, played in the Rose Bowl. Oregon, led by quarterback Norm Van Brocklin and halfback John McKay, opted for a playoff game, but California declined. The tiebreaker format the PCC elected to use was that the championship team be elected by the schools. The PCC had ten member schools in 1948, six in the Northwest (with Idaho & Montana) and four in California, so it was assumed that Oregon would be the team playing in the Rose Bowl, as even a 5–5 tie vote would be in their favor. Instead California was voted champion of the PCC, because Washington had persuaded Montana to vote for California, something that has not been forgotten by Oregon fans.
