This seems like something that is doable, but when I think of my body weight, it doesn't make sense that, with the downward motion, I could stop myself, and then pull myself up afterward with just my arms and back. I'm not buying it.

Thoughts?

And everyone knows that it may be possible if an angry husband is in the house trying to kill you for nailing his ol' lady and the only possible escape route is via the balcony/tree limb jump for survival.
A random attempt will lead to disaster.

There is a better chance of you pulling this off than dying from COVID-19.

I’ve been thinking about this same thing everyday for the past 25 years.

I too need to know this incredibly useful information. The things I could do with this knowledge are infinite.

This is the kind of post that keeps me here. I often wonder if I can leap off of the 2nd floor balcony at church and grab hold of the microphone hanging from the ceiling.

My calculations suggest that your hands may not be able to grasp the microphone with you bodyweight pulling on you.

Doesn’t seem impossible for someone decently in shape, esp in a high adrenaline situation that may force one into this situation. Depending on your jump and the tree it seems like your feet could come into play.

The harder part would be actually latching onto the branch, the lift up would be easier imo

how far laterally?
how far vertically?

both matter. a LOT.

I jumped from a balcony to a tree before in a "hot escape"
but jumped is probably an overstatement. Hopped is probably more accurate as the branch was really close and roughly same height.

He'd it been further and lower where gravity really had a chance to start working, probably would not have ended as well.

If you actually manage to grab the branch and hold on to it, I think you'll have two dislocated shoulders immediately before you die from a massive impact with a planet.

We did this sort of thing at a ropes course once. You had to climb up to the top of a telephone pole, maybe 30 or 40 feet. Then, you stood on top of this wobbly fricking thing which, if you've never done it, is fricking terrifying once you get up there and realize what the frick you've done. When you got up there, about 6 feet out in front of you was a trapeze set up and you had to jump off and grab the fricking trapeze. It was set up intentionally to be impossible unless you were trained in the trapeze jumping arts. You were supposed to overcome your fear and jump anyway or some such bullshite like that. Jumping off of questionable support toward uncertain salvation on blind faith alone doesn't sound like a healthy life lesson to me. Maybe I misunderstood the intent.

Anyway, the trapeze was just a bit too far to realistically reach and nobody really thinks about jumping slightly upwards to counteract how much you'll fall on the way to the trapeze. Also, you were jumping off a wobbly goddamned telephone pole. Our tallest, lankiest guy actually got hands on the trapeze, but didn't have the hand strength to hold on.

Luckily, there was like a 300 pounder on belay so we didn't plummet to our deaths. I was still shithammered from the night before because I knew I had to go to this stupid thing and I'm terrified of heights, so I just scrambled up there and jumped before my alcohol addled brain could stop me. Ironically, we had to do that ropes course because we violated the university's alcohol policy.

Afterwards, we went to Denny's.

Thus ends today's installment of "Cool Story, Bro".

Just take a dildo up the rear.

It’s less embarrassing and less painful than what you’re attempting.
