Japan has a low rate of COVID 19 deaths

Apologies if this is a duplicate thread. I did a search for Japan and didn't see anything in this vein.
So I was watching Contagion, and Tokyo flashed on the screen showing a population of 35 million plus. It got me to wondering how Japan was doing with this pandemic, as I haven't heard much in the news about it.
Fact check, from Wikipedia, "As of 2019, the population of Tokyo was estimated to be over 13.9 million, making it Japan's most populous prefecture. The metropolitan area is the world's most populous with over 38 million people as well as the world's largest urban agglomeration economy."
WSJ article "Japan's coronavirus cases fall sharply without compulsory measures"
The article might be behind a paywall.
Japan's stats: "Japan has reported 13,385 infections and 351 deaths, a death toll lower than in many U.S. states."
A caveat to that data in that Japan's testing rate has been low.
Japan's mitigation measures:
"Unlike many Western countries, Japan hasn’t imposed a lockdown backed with fines or other penalties. Instead, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has asked people to reduce their contact with others by 80% and encouraged businesses to reduce hours of operation or close. Restaurants may open but are asked to close by 8 p.m."
Japan has a land area of under 146,000 square miles, with a population of just over 125 million.
Tokyo population density is 6,158 persons per square kilometer.
New York population density is higher, 10,194/km².
Some food for thought.

Japanese tend to avoid each other, wear masks, and work so hard they kill themselves too. I'm happy their COVID rate is low but I sure don't envy them.

Couple of times I went to Japan it seemed like more people were wearing masks in crowded public places on a normal day than Americans are right now.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Reasonable measures to prevent spread, with a more-compliant and healthier population:
"Only 3.6 percent of Japanese have a body mass index (BMI) over 30, which is the international standard for obesity, whereas 32.0 percent of Americans do. A total of 66.5 percent of Americans have a BMI over 25, making them overweight, but only 24.7 percent of Japanese."

Big smokers over there. Nicotine provides huge benefit if you've got the covid. Severely diminished symptoms.

And Japan is not known for wide open spaces. These people live on top of one another like sardines compared to the states.

Sigh.. most of us have pointed to Japan. The masks are worn so you don't spread your sickness to others, not so you won't catch it.
If someone coughs or sneezes into their mask. It stays on them.
If I'm sick and sneeze, cough or spit on you. Well it's on you. The mask isn't stopping that.

Japan did like south korea and froze the bank accounts of people who were identified as positive.
So you could buy stuff online, but you couldn't use money outside of your house and neither could your family members.

The OT misses the point that most of these countries with lax lockdowns have a very compliant population that's very obedient to their government and its regulations. Essentially the opposite of the US.

Nothing is really mandatory here but yeah most people are staying home. The stay at home request has only really been going on here for less than a month. Its going to continue for a few more weeks depending on the threats in each specific area, but major cities that have had the most cases will probably be a bit longer.
I still have been going to the office half time, can go to the grocery store, or whatever shops are still open. Most have closed for the time being.
Cities and towns are allowed to call there own shots basically. Some prefectures and cities have way more cases than others. My city is schedule to start school back up in less than 2 weeks, while other places have said they are looking at September.
Japan had been testing at a much lower rate. They really only wanted people to show up at hospitals if they were in bad shape, and otherwise stay at home. The actually cases numbers here are probably higher, but obviously some people are dying they are just having asymptomatic or mild cases.
However, they have been more proactively testing in the last few weeks.

Japan did a lot of things right like closing their borders early (Taiwan did the same thing). It's also a cultural thing with the masks, you see a lot of them during flu and allergy season. They also have one of the lowest rates of obesity in the developed world.
