Development and encroachment en masse.

Same problem as to why a whitetail doe with a fawn located deep within the suburbs will frick your Goldenlabadoodle up (search for it, but not for Goldenlabadoodle, and for any of you dog lovers like myself, you have been warned), but if the same mutt is out in the rural countryside and runs through Tommy Gregg's pine thicket then said mutt will ruin Tommy Gregg's afternoon deer hunt:

Familiarity breeds contempt.*

*And also the fear induced from being hunted by man can do wonders for the ingrained wildness of an animal.

Crocodiles are slightly deadlier than alligators and southern Florida is the only place they exist in America.

Gators live in way more populated areas in Florida where in Louisiana they pretty much stick to the swamps

Every backyard pond has gators all over it in Florida

When Louisiana has no documented fatal alligator attacks since at least the Revolutionary War, per capita data doesn't really matter.

Others have hit the main 3 factors: there are a lot more people in FL, a high% of them are kinda stupid/naive (Florida Man, toursits, etc), and people spend a lot more time swimming in fresh water lakes in FL.

Another minor factor: when considering fatalities, the size of the gator matters. Winter is warm enough south of Lake Okeechobee that gators don't hibernate. A 12-months-a-year growing season means bigger gators.

I've swam within 10ft of 5 to 6 of them and not a worry in the world.

That's something I'll never get. I used to go out with my friend from Houma on his boat into some pretty heavily gator-infested waters. He'd jump right in and swim around. My skinny Tennessee arse would sit on the boat. No way I'm getting in there when you can see big ones on the bank 20 yards away. Call me a pussy, I don't care. Not getting in there.

I do think it’s the lakes and also the habitat. Florida gators get very creative moving from fresh to salt to pools... Grew up on the Pearl River levy backing up to the Honey Island Swamp. They were everywhere and we gave them no thought. I don’t think there’s ever been an attack in that massive area. Heck, we used to rope swing right over them. Snakes, now that’s a different story.

Because the pythons are wiping out the wildlife that the gators would normally eat. So they are downing humans like scooby snacks. I got chased by one in my kayak that was as long as my boat. Not a fun day.

A hungry gator is NOT afraid of humans.
