People in Florida feed them. They associate people w food. If there is a big or aggressive gator (because people feed them) they can’t do anything about it. If someone should trap or shoot the gator, people would go nuts, call police, wildlife and fisheries, etc.

If a gator gets big or aggressive in Louisiana, they get shot. Most, if not all neighbors will be glad. Cameron prairie wildlife refuge has posted signs that state: Do not feed the gators, they will get accustomed to people and shot. That’s at the wildlife refuge- no such good since in Fla.

Of course it is. Their arms wouldn't be long enough to pull the rip cord.

Because when a gator in Louisiana sees a cajun in the water it doesn't know if it's going to get a meal or be the meal, so more reluctant to have an encounter.

Because a Cajun knows what do with a gator. A Florida redneck is clueless.

They are in every subdivision every built in Fla. on any body of water. They eat family pets everyday. It’s a normal thing for them to crawl in backyards and seek meat.

Another minor factor: when considering fatalities, the size of the gator matters. Winter is warm enough south of Lake Okeechobee that gators don't hibernate. A 12-months-a-year growing season means bigger gators

I think studies have shown that while in general FL has a longer "growing" season, alligators in LA grow faster due to a better diet.

IMO, FL has more people and less gator habitat than LA. Hence, more man-gator encounters.

Tragic Story of Brevard Co. Man

When I lived in Slidell, the trapper (Sheriff McCrae?) eventually had to kill a 9-10" gator behind our house before Katrina. I asked him how many he trapped in a year and he said around 300. He relocated them to Honey Island Swamp.

There was a teenager in Slidell that went swimming with an 11' gator and lost an arm. He didn't die so not a fatality but a serious injury.

You think they don't hunt them in Florida?

The difference is that most of the gators in LA are in rural wetlands. There are hundreds of thousands of alligators in florida that live and die within city limits. The whole state is covered in canals in south FL due to the elevation and ponds in central and north fl due to the aquifer. The entire state is similar south Louisiana. In short, there's a lot more gators living closer to people in Florida

Because new people move into Florida all the time and don’t understand that if it’s a body of water, you can assume alligators live there. Population size is a little different right?

Basically 4-1

Otherwise I don’t really know.

I think you've explained it pretty well.

Alligators can eat well in LA without ever having to cross paths with man. Not so in FL.

I think population estimates for gators are about the same in both states but way more people in FL.

Because there is more interaction between gators and people in Florida.

Baws in Louisiana are probably smarter around animals than people from Florida to be honest. All those years on the bayou and what not.

That was going to be my assessment as well- Bayou baws have built in smarts!

Nope. I would never do that. It's OK for you to call me crazy though because maybe it was. Those gators were on the surface watching me tread water only feet from me. They could have torn me apart if they wanted to but I think they were curious. Like what the frick is that?

Florida law is that you can only kill a gator if it is shown to be a nuisance.

By comparison, LA, Georgia, and other states allow hunting if you obtain a permit.

I've never seen or heard of gators being a problem in False River. I'm sure they are there, but they will be destroyed if they get close to people's camps. They learn to stay away or they die. People in the area are generally ok w/ that.

Disney refused to remove gators in an artificial lake on their property.
