What makes Rod Carew so nondescript compared with other baseball greats?

So often we hear of the Yankee legends, Ruth, DiMaggio, Mantle, Gehrig, etc...
Barry Bonds, Ted Williams, Cal Ripken, Hank Aaron, etc...
Rod Carew:
18× All-Star (1967–1984)
AL MVP (1977)
AL Rookie of the Year (1967)
Roberto Clemente Award (1977)
7× AL batting champion (1969, 1972–1975, 1977, 1978)
Second most batting titles to Ty Cobb.
Was playing for the Angels his downfall as far as popularity and name recognition goes?
I feel like he’s forgotten about in MLB great conversations.

But guess who is? Hall of Famer Rod Carew

I think he gets overshadowed because he wasn’t a power hitter who played on some bad teams. How do his stats match up to Tony Gwynn’s?

My line about Carew was from an Adam Sandler song.

I am old enough to remember Carew playing and I could be wrong, but he was viewed similar to Tony Gwynn in a great player/exceptional hitter playing on terrible teams.
He was quiet and professional in a time with some great characters in the game.

Yeah, we got it.

He just didn’t hit for a lot of power, but played a position where the GOATS did. Still, I agree he is somewhat overlooked. His MVP year was really good.

His .388 in 1977 is the 4th highest BA in a single season since 1941 when Ted Williams hit .400

Slap hitter. Chicks love the big stick & long ball.

I saw that. Drove in 100, had 16 triples, 15-20 homers and an OPS over 1.000. Really good season, especially for that time period.

1st ballot HOF Rod Carew?
Carew was one of the great players in the 70s and 80s. He was Ichiro of that era, slapped the ball in play (.328 average).
Interesting fact, Carew not only was a great baseball player/manager in the MLB...but had a 6 year stint in the Marine Corp in 60s.
Read his biography when I was in high school.

It didn't end well for Carew with the Twins, not blaming him it was completely on the owner.

Burned a lot of time in my back yard with one of these.

Carew was immortalized in a hit Beastie Boys song in the mid 90s, that's pretty good for a guy that retired in the mid 80s.
I think most of the guys who played primarily during the 70s and early 80s are a little under the radar, except for the most elite guys. I don't even hear about guys like Mike Schmidt who are probably the best of their position as much as I would expect.

Kicking out mad hits like Rod Carew.

He threw the hands out to the ball like Gwynn. He was the example of hit it where it's pitched. You could not shift (todady) on Carew he would just hit thee ball in the hole.

In sex, a guy who tries to get from first base to third base a little too fast with his girl is known to be pulling a Rod Carew.
