Played a position, 1st Base, known for power hitting and a lower average, where he hit for a high average and no power. In the 70's and 80's a .240-35-95 line at first was considered just as good or better than a Carew line of say .339-6-55.
Side note, I used to love me some Rod Carew.

Nolan Ryan once said Carew was the only guy who could consistently pull his fastball.

For just pure hitters Rod Carew and Tony Gwynn are 1A and 1B that I've seen in my lifetime with Wade Boggs 3, Pete Rose 4, and George Brett 5.

I remember as a kid you heard of Rod Carew but no one actually saw him play.

And I was living in CA.

Dodgers/Giants were on TV, not the Angels.

This was before ESPN. You had one baseball game, one Saturday afternoon CFB game of the week and two NFL games.

And no Hockey, this was America dammit.

I'm not sure why they moved him to 1st base since he was a perrenial All-Star at 2nd.

His most overlooked accomplishment was tying the ML record of 7 steals of home in one season.

His 7th steal came on July 16th, 1969 and he only had 19 total steals on the season. LINK

That was a decently regarded team, in 1977, they had a winning record and some notable players in Carew, SP Dave Goltz, C Butch Wynegar, SS Roy Smally, 3B Mike Cubbage, OF Lyman Bostock (who was killed a couple years later), Larry Hisle, with a couple good relievers, too.

To be fair, I had almost all these guys baseball cards off the bottom of my Hostess Twinkies and King Dons' boxes.

Stuck in Minnehaha. No cable TV for most of his career so you got the NBC game of the week and ABC Monday night's. That was it.

2nd basemen hit for power? Angels moved him after the trade due to Lansford.

Knee injury that cut his range was one reason.
