Pretty sure this is just for ceremonial purposes. Not sure why they’re dressed like this now though.
In their deployments (like Afghanistan) they dress normal soldiers

Last time I was in Barcelona they had military troops with automatic weapons all over the city. And those dudes were hard as Frick. Basically like these guys without the fab unis. Bottom line-they were definitely legit from a SECURITY standpoint.
