From the Advocate- Advocate Link

quote:

Moore and Rep. Frederick Jones prefiled Louisiana House Bill 137. Moore says they feel the vagrancy law is unconstitutional.

"All I’m trying to do is say these particular vagrancy laws were designed for a purpose that our country and our state don’t want to participate in any longer. We don’t even want it on the books. It’s in the past. We’re moving forward. And let’s just look at removing things that have a dark history that we don’t need any longer.”

That “dark history” is racism, Moore says.

Moore says credible researchers have presented evidence to her that the law was originally used as a tool to coerce African Americans back into slavery after they were freed from servitude.

“We don’t want to keep laws on the books that were certainly designed to prevent free slaves. It was targeted to the free slaves in trying to get them to come back and be submissive to slavery,“ said Moore.

Guess we will just bring CA to Louisiana.

Sorry if Germans, not really though.

Wow, that's a weird take they have on why the laws are there.

Either way, LA does not want this to happen. All evidence shows it's a bad idea, yet Dem leaders want to embrace self-destruction.

Why can’t stuff just be reviewed on merit? Good things can be created from bad intentions just as the reverse can also happen. Communism is the ultimate example of the reverse.

This goes back to the argument of "should we do away with the interstate system since it is based completely off the system Hitler created in Germany?"

Just because it may have started with ill intent does not necessarily mean it's being practiced that way today.

At the very least this looks like a cowardly way to promote vagrancy from behind a paper shield of fighting racism.

While we are throwing out old, unconstitutional laws, can we include the crimes against nature statute?

So repeal a portion of the law and/or propose a new law that keeps our cities and towns safe, clean and free of the rest of the problems we are seeing happening in other cities.

But that is not their argument. Their argument is that law is racist so throw it all out. No proposal to improve the law.

The Supreme Court has already declared such laws as unconstitutional.

I do find it funny how prostitutes were added in the end as they don't fit the description of beggars, drunks, etc.

So are any of those laws actually enforced, and should they be enforced?

1-6 are stupid

7-8 can be prosecuted under disturbing the peace / trespassing laws

9, well, lots of laws about that

I'm all for cleaning up laws that should no longer be on the books.

That’s fine. They injected racism into the argument though. If it’s unconstitutional, it’s unconstitutional.

In fact, I have no idea what the law is, besides the fact that someone said it was created from racism.
