How good could Mettenburger have been if he played backup in the 2011 season?
This right here is an underrated post. The development of Mett was ridiculous. 2012 offense should’ve been much better. That team could’ve been a NC contender.

What if we would have hired Steve Spurrier instead of Curly Hallman or Bobby Bowden instead of Bo Rein.

If Okie State doesn’t miss a damn FG to send Bama to the NC

Biggest one is missed 2 point conversion against Tennessee in 1959. LSU would’ve been repeat National champs no question.
It was missed by an inch. Some say it was in.

Then we LSU fans probably claim 2011 as the greatest season ever. I don’t agree with the folks who say we’d therefore beat Bama in 2012 and then with that NC too. But a 2011 NC surely buys Les more staying power and we may not get 2019.
In the end, I’d rather have this 2019 season and all it’s accolades—a fricking LSU QB won the Heisman lol—and it’s insane offense.

What if you never started this post??

We win that game if we run the ball twice and kick a FG at the end. It baffled me that a coach who never saw a run play he didn't love suddenly decided to start throwing at a time when it really wasn't necessary.

It's tough to play "what if's" and your point is well taken. But that '11 defense was terrifying and a lot of fun to watch. It was brutal watching them get hung out to dry against Bama. Les or no Les, that team was so close to greatness it's still rough to think about.

-OkSU missing that damn FG vs ISU. We would have steam-rolled them in the NCG.
-If WVU took care of business vs Pitt, we would not have the 2007 NCG. Everyone knew we deserved to at least play tOSU, but we were on the outside looking in thanks to a two-loss season. I remember being so disappointed after the Arkansas OT loss and then losing my mind when Pitt won. I can't imagine how sick tOSU fans must have been--like, oh great, here comes another beating on the national stage from an SEC team.
-If RP wasn't such an idiot: honestly, I don't know much this one would've mattered. It's not so much that we didn't recover from his absence than it was Les not knowing how to develop a QB.
-Every two-loss season. It was usually a loss to Bama or Florida that knocked us out of contention. I remember the UF game where OBJ fumbled a deep pass late in the game.
-2011, no Mettenberger. JJ got arrested before the Oregon game and Jarrett Lee was terrible. The counter argument is that Mett didn't know the playbook well enough. Honestly, it didn't look like JL or JJ knew it either. This was all about Les being way too conservative, while coaches like Saban will bench perennial starter Jalen Hurts for Tua at the half time of the NCG. Speaking of which:
2012 NCG, never playing JL: this one is unforgivable. We didn't move the ball into enemy territory until late in the game (3rd or 4th quarter). There was no reason not to at least give JL a single drive. JL had played in multiple games that year and Les was fixated on "we need a mobile an vs Bama." JJ was doing more harm than good and the team looked defeated by the early third quarter. I don't even blame JJ here, this was 100% Les.
-LF v Derrick Henry: LF was the heisman front runner. Not only did this one game completely flip the heisman projection, it had the same effect on the NCG projection.
-Coach Orgeron coming out of retirement: he didn't have to take a position coaching job for LSU, but he did. He didn't have to come out of retirement, but he did. Brady, Burrow... the rest is history; beautiful, storybook history.
The fact that all the above happened, makes our 2019 season so damn satisfying.

The loss to Ole Miss.in 1969 or the loss to TN in 1959. Both of those those resulted in LSU not playing for a NC.

Not the biggest what if, but I think if Tyrann returns the second punt return for a TD in SECCG he wins the Heisman. Regardless it was a spectacular return and he was most outstanding player that year. I just wonder what if he got a second TD against UGA would that have swung the vote?

I don’t know if these were mentioned but:
What if Ara P was hired in the 50s instead of Paul Deitzel? Would LSU have become what ND did under him.
What if Deitzel didn’t leave for Army, would LSU have won more NCs?
What would LSU had been like had Bo Rein not tragically died?
I’ve always wondered what would have become of LSU had Spurrier been hired instead of Archer?

If Fess Irvin makes 2 free throws to put LSU up 3 over Indiana in 1986 regional title game and LSU holds on!to win. Head to Final Four in New Orleans.
Definitely - and also a giant what if Rudy Macklin hadn't broken his finger in 1981 in the regional final?

If your dad’s swimmers ended up on your mom’s chin, this board would be improved.

1. Never knew that Ara was a potential candidate—- that’s pretty awesome.
2. I grew up hearing that Paul was forced out— heard multiple scandal rumors did him in
3. Spurrier. Wow that could have been a better 90s era football for sure.

2. Leonard Fournette’s high ankle sprain 2016 in camp- would Leslie have won 10 games?
Les’ stupid arse should’ve kept LF out of the Wisconsin game and played Guice. LF was obviously injured but Les kept him in the game. What a moron.

What if Nick Saban tells Wayne Huizenga "Thanks, but no thanks." Saban won NC's with Mauck, Greg McElroy, Blake Sims and Jacob Coker. What would Saban have accomplished with Jamarcus Russell and Jimbo Fisher as OC?
If that happened maybe the Dolphins HC takes Brees over Culpepper and the Saints continue to challenge the Browns for the worst franchise in the NFL.

My biggest one is what if LSU would have beat Alabama in 2012. If LSU’s defense could have made a stop on that drive

Shepard was never going to play QB at the college level. He wasn’t a good enough passer.

One rumor I heard from an old timer, old former New Orleans cop, was that dietzel was sleeping with a local mobsters wife or girlfriend and it was a leave town or sleep with the fishes type situation.
