The Parish used to have some good ones like Gladiators on the first Friday....Maclean Stevenson was king one year and called Chalmette a ghetto suburb on Carson.....the natives were not appreciative.

I miss Mardi Gras in The Parish, lots of fun memories growing up.

Mid City used to roll down Canal Street on Sunday. It would start on S.St.Patrick next to St.Anthony of Padua. I want to say bsck in the day, Okeanos paraded on the downtown side of Canal and I want to say it had part of its route on St. Claude

Carrollton and Pontchartrain also used to run through mid city, down basically the Endymion route on the weekend (Sunday, I believe) before Endymion.

Parades used to go down 4th Street on the westbank from Marrerro to Gretna. Poseidon was always a big one.

Went to Mardi Gras Day there the year of the police strike. Watched the parades and then all the families would head down to Kenilworth down the road for grilling and picnics

Zeus and Argus tried to move back to Metairie Road 5 years ago. The vote passed barely but then the guy who owns Majoria Drugs and a few others went ballistic and it didn’t happen. St. Patrick’s Day Parade still goes down the route.

We were always in Chalmette. We would camp out in the parking lot of Randazzos.

I remember 12 straight days of parades in Metairie. Some of them were absolutely terrible (I'm looking at you, Diana) but we still went to every parade.

Sundays were a day/night doubleheader. Would be about three-four hours between the first one ending and the second one beginning. We would all walk down to Panchos or O'Henrys and eat, then walk back. Sometimes, the police would keep Veterans closed between parades, and a strong game of football would break out.

Anyone remember Krewe of America? It took the Comus spot for a few years in the late 90s. It was supposed to be a parade for out of towners, who would pay one price that included airfare, hotel, food, the ride, throws, etc. No ball or anything. No marching bands. Was horrible. Lasted maybe 3-4 years.

for most of them, it seams every couple of years they changed

i think the Rex and Endymion were one of the few that went the longest and never changed

it would be interesting to see how they all changed over the years as populations and roads changed

The library probably has some of the old Arthur Hardy guides to Mardi Gras that would have the parade routes each year. Also, the routes used to be published in the T-P. Their online archives are searchable for free with a library card.

Here's an example from the T-P:

Some of these had a Jefferson Hwy route prior to Metairie Road.

I'm trying to remember the pre 1969 routes of the 4 Westbank parades...

Choctaw and Alla - same route, different day!!! started on General Meyer which turned into Newton, made a turn somewhere and ended up making a right onto Opelousas and then a right onto Elmira...then a left onto Pelican Ave.

the parades ended a ways down there...

Grela ... there were a couple of variations, sometimes it started on Franklin, sometimes it started over by the Jefferson Parish Courthouse...would always go on Huey Long...

Poseidon ... started at West Jeff, followed 4th street all the way down to Louisiana Street in Westwego...

that's the best I can remember of these...
