Baton Rouge Dining Advice

Will be in BTR with family of 4 for my son to take a campus tour in two weeks. We are all foodies I guess you’d say and looking for the best (must go once before you die if you’re in BTR) type dinner spots for a Sunday night and breakfast/lunch on Monday. i guess sort of like local institutions like Gallatoire’s in NOLA or one of the cool neighborhood places along Magazine St. I really want to impress the fam who dont know much about BTR other than what they read on google which talks about the high crime, crappy streets, etc etc. and I just dont know where to go. Maybe there is a garden district-type area with cool older homes, nice upscale boutiques, shops and good restaurants?? Just wanting them to see its not a frickin ghetto war zone as soon as you exit the campus..haha So far, theyve only been to BTR for this past TAMU game in Nov, which only included experiencing the Hampton downtown, The Chimes on gameday (standing room only) and a friend’s tailgate. Oh, and we swung by the Jambalaya Shoppe on way out of town the next day located near campus in a strip mall (nice folks and good jamb). Also im not afraid to drive a little for the best hole in the wall joint either... Any advice is greatly appreciated for a hopeful future Tiger Dad. Hope this hasn’t already been asked and answered. If so, my apologies!

If you want Cajun food, drive to Lafayette.
If you want Creole food, drive to New Orleans.
If you want to be disappointed, stay in Baton Rouge.

Parrain’s (same owner as Chimes) - casual dining, but good seafood
Roberto’s River Road Restaurant
Louisiana Lagniappe
Mansur’s
Gino’s, best Italian
The Little Village
Ruffino’s
Off the top of my head. I purposely left off steak houses as these are interchangeable in my mind.

This is a solid list
Food doesn’t compare to New Orleans, but we have closed the gap on the ghetto war zone front.

That's a solid list. I'd probably throw Elsie's Plate and Pie on there for a good lunch spot

I would 100% just take him from campus down Dalrymple to Broussard, and back down Perkins. It'll show him the lakes, City Park, the Garden District area, and the Perkins Overpass area which has shops/bars/restaurants.
Government street is making a huge comeback and alot of the buildings are being redeveloped along with the street being completely re-done. There are alot of cool places to go there, but for someone from Fort Worth it would probably still look alot like the ghetto
Then there is Downtown which will be dead for the most part, but if you happen to be staying there or if he is into running/biking/walking, the Downtown Greenway and the levee are both pretty cool and I'd show him.
For a college kid, I'd recommend Elsie's on Government Street. If you want something a little nicer, I'd go to Zorba's on Essen, its great Greek food.

Rama is a hole in the wall Thai place that's one of my favorite meals in town.
Zorba's on Essen is great Greek food.
Parrains is a solid choice for cajun food where you won't break the bank.

We've enjoyed French Market Bistro which is in a nice area of the city.

Is Maison Lacour still around?

For good casual lunch spots:
Overpass Merchant
Elsies Plate and Pie
For dinner:
Rocca - good neapolitan pizza
French Market Bistro
Kalurah Street Grill -both K Steet and FMB are a little more upscale, great place for seafood, pasta, steak, etc.
Ninos - I prefer Ninos over Ginos for Italian
Zorbas - really good greek food
Soji - general Asian food, cool atmosphere
Umami - best sushi in BR

I like this list except Gino's is second best Italian. Nino's crushes Gino's.

Why not drive down to Latil's Landing?

Man..wow! You guys are so quick and kind to take the time to respond with so many options. It will be myself, the wife, H.S. Junior Son and H.S. Freshman Daughter. Staying at Cook Hotel (hope its good). Will be arriving BTR about noon or 1pm Sunday 3/8 so will need a lunch/brunch spot and then dinner spot for Sunday night (prob be the best for a nice dining spot). Then breakfast/lunch either at hotel or somewhere nearby thats good. I think the tour is at 1pm. Im going to start checking out everyone’s suggestions now. Alot more to choose from than I expected, which is great. I will focus on the names I see that are starting to be repeated by several posters. Anyone know if looking at Yelp is worth it for BTR dining? Sometimes those reviews are reliable and sometimes they are either off or self-posted I think...
