It sucks and I feel bad for his family.

This does not impact my personal life in any way.

Yes, yes it is.

Maybe he's just a big Mehmet Okur fan.

Haha i actually completely agreed with your Okur sentiment. I was trying to make a point. Thought that was obvious, my bad. i was just pointing out that there were levels to this shite and everyone (on the internet) seemed to be going to the top fricking floor. Leave some room for the real shite like your parents dying.

You and i actually seem to be 90% on the same page. You just are more annoyed by me being annoyed than by what i was annoyed by. Which is fair, if im being honest.

I would never express any of these opinions in person or on another platform. That would make me a dick lol.

It’s akin to taking the dumbest possible posts on a subject and trying to extrapolate it to an entire fanbase or group

There are people on the OT comparing McCain to Kobe and asking which one is in heaven, but I’d never accuse this entire website of such dumbassery.

On the topic - personal reactions, especially grief/pain, are all relative. I don’t know what it’s like to grow up in LA (or anywhere else, really) with Kobe as a role model and outlet for life’s bullshite/monotony. I’m not gonna play grief police and tell those people it’s weird to react with genuine sadness.

I feel bad for all the children. I have a 13 year old and I cannot imagine ever losing him.

Eh, people don't know what to tell someone when they're grieving. They're trying their best usually.

Never was an NBA fan, so Kobe Bryant wasn’t an athlete/celebrity I paid much (if any) attention to. His death is sad and sudden, but means no more or less to me than the others who died along with him, or anyone else I don’t know who died so tragically.

I am personally surprised by how many people are "truly upset" about this

I think it has more to do with being shocked than truly upset. You don't expect to hear about a 41 y/o that you have seen on TV for the last 23 years dying unless they were sick. Its only amplified when you find out he teenage daughter with him because you start thinking about what would be going through your mind if you were in that situation.

For those that are truly upset and crying baffle me as well. But, I also know I handle death very different than just about everyone I know.

Anyone else surprised at how upset they are personally by this Kobe news?

I grew up a fan of Houston sports. I "hated" Kobe as a kid, because him, and the Lakers were always better than T-Mac, Yao, & the Rockets, and beat them a few times in the playoffs, some games almost single-handedly because of Kobe. I always had respect for his game tho, as, like most young kids did at that time during pick-up games, whenever I shot fade aways, or one that I was certain was going in, I would yell "Koobbbeeee" cause that's just what you did. The man was synonymous with getting buckets, and being great. I remember being a bit older, and watching the Celtics vs Lakers finals, and just admiring how good he was every game, especially in the 4th. I remember either freshamn or sophmore year in college I saw the video of him, not even slightly flinching when Matt Barnes faked throwing a ball right in his face, and then smirking. I remember thinking "oh that's what "you put no fear in my heart" personified looks like. I genuinely liked Kobe from that moment on. Over the years with his charitable work, his "Mamba" team and their sucess, his obvious love and devotion to his kids, and his movie "Dear Basketball" I began to really like him as a person and not just a player. I think who he's shown us he is as a person over the past few years, the favt that one of his kids was on the choper, combined with the suddenness and surprise of it all has added to how hard people have taken it.

I am not upset about this at all, he was a sports figure and he past away.

Maybe this board can help me out, I have not seen anything posted about Antonio Moore dying on January 24th. Oh, that is Spc. Antonio Moore. I am more saddened by his death and all the other heirs out there fighting for sports figures to do what they do.

Just saying.......

We'd always do that. I'm pleasantly surprised how often I'm seeing this everywhere

I think we're arguing semantics a lot in here by saying more/less sad by Kobe vs a US Military guy. I'm equally saddened by both, but the Kobe one will stick with me more, and I'll think about it more for obvious reasons.

1 is a guy who I never heard of until you just said it. The other is a guy who plays the sport I love and has been a figure in the sports world for over half my life, and I've spent countless hours watching/discussing. It's human nature, there's just an emotional investment there for 1 that you don't get for the other.

But like I said, it really does come down to semantics. I wouldn't say I'm more sad about Kobe, but it absolutely does/will hit me harder for all the reasons above. Maybe that's contradictory and does mean I'm more sad, but if so, I'll fall back to saying that's just human nature, seems pretty rational IMO.

Why don't you link his story and spread the word? Don't be surprised that no one is posting about a death that they don't know about.
